Tom Holland Discusses His Toughest Year of Sobriety on Amy Poehler’s Podcast
Tom Holland has opened up about his relationship with alcohol and why he decided to stop drinking in early 2022. He explained that he reached a point where alcohol was starting to affect both his personal life and his work. That realization pushed him to make a change.
Speaking on Amy Poehler’s podcast, he shared that after quitting alcohol in January 2022, the first year of sobriety was the hardest period he had ever experienced. He described it as a major adjustment, especially in social situations where drinking is common.
Holland talked about how challenging it was initially to be around others drinking while he was not. He explained that many social events felt unfamiliar without alcohol, and he had to learn to be present in those moments in a different way. The experience made him realize how ingrained drinking is in everyday social life.
He noted that he began to see how limited the options were for those who do not drink in social settings. Holland described moments where others were drinking while he had something like a soft drink, and how that contrast sometimes felt isolating.
Over time, these experiences inspired him to create something new. This idea eventually led to the launch of Bero, a non-alcoholic beer brand he helped establish. The brand was directly influenced by his own sobriety journey and his desire to provide better options for those who choose not to drink alcohol.
He also mentioned that the brand became part of social moments with friends, including actress Zendaya. They created a simple drink mix using Bero and lemonade so that everyone could partake in social drinking moments without alcohol.
In another interview with GQ, Holland reflected on his life before quitting alcohol. He clarified that his drinking habits were not the typical “wild Hollywood” lifestyle that many might assume. Instead, he described it as more private and at times lonely.
He said, “I had my times, but I wasn’t necessarily the nightclub-going person as much as I could sit at home in my hotel room and finish a minibar and go to work the next day.” He added, “So my version of wild was very, I guess, un-Hollywood.”
Holland explained that he began drinking more heavily during his rise in Hollywood, especially while working on major films and the ‘Spider-Man’ series. Despite enjoying his career success, he later recognized that his habits were unhealthy.
He stated that taking a break from alcohol allowed him to reset his life and focus more on his well-being and career choices. He also mentioned that stepping away from drinking provided him the clarity to think about what he wanted moving forward.
Now, after several years of sobriety, Holland has returned to major film projects while also developing personal ventures like his non-alcoholic drink brand. He described this stage of his life as a reset that has helped him grow both personally and professionally.
