Tom Holland Reveals Major Secrets About ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Fans Didn’t Expect
Marvel’s promotional efforts are in full swing as the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ approaches, with the global press tour generating the kind of excitement fans crave.
On June 24, Tom Holland and Zendaya made a special appearance in Paris to celebrate the upcoming film during a fan event hosted by Sony Pictures and UGC at UGC Ciné Cité Bercy, where hundreds of Marvel enthusiasts gathered to greet the stars of the next chapter in Spider-Man’s saga.
The Paris event was just one stop in a whirlwind tour that has already taken the duo through Amsterdam, Madrid, and Berlin, and it certainly delivered some exciting revelations.
Leading up to the Paris event, anticipation was already high. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to hit theaters in the United States on July 31 as part of Phase Six of the MCU. The film continues four years after Dr. Stephen Strange’s spell at the end of ‘No Way Home’, with Peter Parker secretly protecting New York City as Spider-Man while his powers undergo a surprising and potentially perilous evolution.
For a film so close to its release, the amount of genuine mystery surrounding it has been impressive, and Tom Holland has been fueling that intrigue at every stop.
In Paris, Holland dropped three major revelations. He confirmed that Spider-Man will be fighting against superheroes in this film, that returning villains will make an appearance, and that a significant new villain will debut. Each of these points is significant, but together they suggest a film with a much more intricate web of loyalties and threats than the trailers have revealed.
The news that Spider-Man will find himself at odds with other superheroes rather than teaming up with them is perhaps the most intriguing. The second trailer, released on June 17, showcased Mark Ruffalo’s uncontrollable Savage Hulk, who last appeared in the MCU during ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
Footage has also hinted at Spider-Man using Shocker’s gauntlets in a confrontation, which fans have speculated may be aimed at the Hulk. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and Peter Parker start off as adversaries before their rivalry evolves into a more complex relationship.
The concept of Peter facing off against powered individuals instead of simply teaming up with them adds a layer of moral complexity to the film that previous MCU Spider-Man entries have not explored.
On the villain front, Holland has been increasingly open, and the Paris event provided a comprehensive overview. He informed the audience that the film will feature numerous new villains, some returning, and one major villain making their debut.
Michael Mando reprises his role as Mac Gargan and Scorpion after his appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ nearly a decade ago, while Marvin Jones III portrays crime boss Lonnie Lincoln and Tombstone, with characters like Boomerang, Tarantula, and Ramrod also set to appear. The criminal organization the Hand, known from Marvel’s Netflix series, has also been confirmed through the trailers.
Despite all this, the most tantalizing tease concerns a villain that remains entirely under wraps. Holland had already stirred excitement at the Berlin stop earlier in the week, stating that the film features a villain who is unlike any seen in previous movies.
The Paris event only heightened that suspense. Sony’s official synopsis hints at a formidable threat described as one of the most powerful Peter Parker has ever faced, while leaked footage suggests this villain may have the ability to inhabit other people’s bodies, explaining their absence from all marketing materials. Fan theories have speculated about the Jackal and various shapeshifting villains, and Holland himself mentioned to Vanity Fair that some of the wildest fan theories are surprisingly accurate to the film’s plot.
The response on social media has been exactly what you would expect. Holland shared in an interview with Empire that ‘Brand New Day’ is the first time he has been genuinely involved in the writers’ room, participating in creative meetings with producers before any script was finalized.
This creative involvement seems to have paid off in ways that fans are just beginning to grasp. Holland told Complex Pop that it feels like they are not making a fourth movie but rather the first film in a new chapter, describing it as a rebirth and something entirely fresh. With such a vast villain roster and a premise that turns Peter Parker against some of the heroes he once fought alongside, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is shaping up to be an unpredictable summer blockbuster.
