Tom Holland Shares How Marvel Discovered His Hotel Minibar Incident Before Screen Test
Tom Holland has been candid throughout 2026 about his choice to quit alcohol, using a series of high-profile interviews to discuss a previously private chapter of his life.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to premiere this summer, Holland finds himself back in the spotlight, where discussions often revolve around his sobriety rather than film spoilers.
This openness has become a recurring theme in his recent press engagements, appearing on platforms ranging from Amy Poehler’s podcast to morning talk shows. Holland has shared his journey of quitting drinking in January 2022, revealing how the habit began to impact both his personal life and his work on major films. Recently, an older story from his past has resurfaced, linking his drinking to the role that catapulted him to fame.
Holland disclosed that Marvel found out about his drinking the night before his first screen test with Robert Downey Jr. During an appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast, he recounted how he emptied the minibar in his hotel room before the audition, naively believing it would remain a secret. However, Marvel learned about it after the studio discreetly contacted the hotel.
According to Holland, the truth came to light later during a casual conversation with the studio. He recalled being informed that they were already aware, as they had simply called the hotel to inquire. This revelation caught him completely off guard, marking an embarrassing moment early in his career.
Robert Downey Jr., who has been open about his own struggles with addiction, has reportedly been a strong support for Holland as he navigates his sobriety. The two have maintained a close relationship since ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ with Holland crediting Downey for genuinely understanding his challenges rather than just offering distant sympathy.
While the minibar story isn’t new, it continues to resurface as Holland uses it to illustrate how far he has come since those early days with Marvel. On Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast this month, he reflected on the difficulties of his first year without alcohol, describing it as the toughest challenge he has ever faced.
Holland has mentioned that this experience inspired him to launch Bero, his non-alcoholic beer brand, after noticing a lack of quality options for those choosing not to drink in social situations. He has also credited his fiancée Zendaya, who abstains from alcohol, as a source of inspiration for a new alcohol-free shandy that the brand will introduce this summer.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to hit theaters at the end of July, Holland’s willingness to revisit incidents like the minibar episode indicates that he now embraces his sobriety as part of his public narrative, rather than something to conceal. He has repeatedly stated that he does not wish to preach about drinking less but hopes that his honesty can help others feel less isolated in their struggles.
For an actor who once feared what Marvel might discover about him, Holland now appears more interested in sharing his own story.
