Tom Holland Shares Jason Bourne Moment Filming ‘The Odyssey’ With Matt Damon
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic is celebrated for its grand scale, featuring a cast that spans generations of Hollywood talent and a production that traversed continents to bring the story to life. Amidst all this spectacle lies a more intimate narrative about the star-struck admiration shared between two of its leads.
In the film, Tom Holland portrays Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus, marking a significant dramatic role for him outside the Spider-Man franchise. Holland has expressed how surreal the entire experience felt, often pinching himself at the thought of being cast by Nolan in such a major project.
This sense of disbelief reportedly peaked during a particular scene when Damon caught Holland completely off guard mid-take. According to reports, Damon grabbed Holland while filming and stayed true to his action hero legacy, prompting Holland to recognize him as the iconic figure from one of the most renowned spy franchises in cinematic history.
This moment encapsulates what makes working alongside Damon a unique experience for younger co-stars. Holland has candidly shared in previous interviews how much he has learned simply by observing Damon and Nolan collaborate on set, describing Nolan as someone who is thoroughly engaged with every creative decision involved in the production.
This admiration has been evident throughout the film’s promotional tour. Speaking with Deadline at the film’s world premiere in London, Holland discussed discovering the modern relevance of Homer’s ancient text for the first time, noting that its themes around treating others with basic decency are lessons audiences today could benefit from.
Holland has also shared other behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the production, including a memorable day when unpredictable weather halted filming. He recounted waiting under an umbrella for a bright rainbow to fade, which clashed with the serious tone of a homecoming scene his character was meant to deliver. This detail highlights how much Nolan relied on real locations and natural elements during the shoot.
Damon has echoed similar sentiments regarding the challenges of the production, stating that the physical demands of the shoot were tougher than anything he faced during his years on the Bourne franchise. He noted that the entire cast and crew had to give their all every single day to realize Nolan’s vision for the film.
For Holland, moments like the one with Damon on set have only deepened his appreciation for being part of such an ambitious project. Working alongside one of his favorite action stars and learning directly from Nolan’s meticulous approach has clearly left a lasting impression that extends beyond the finished film.
‘The Odyssey’ is set to hit theaters on July 17, offering audiences their first opportunity to witness the results of a production that pushed its entire cast to their limits both physically and emotionally.
