Tom Holland Shares Major Spider-Man Change Fans Have Anticipated in ‘Brand New Day’
Tom Holland is stepping up his involvement in shaping ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and he reveals that a significant change has come directly from fan feedback.
The forthcoming Marvel film will take Peter Parker in a new direction following the emotional conclusion of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Rather than focusing on world-threatening dangers and epic superhero confrontations, Holland states that the new installment will return Spider-Man to his roots, presenting a more personal and relatable narrative.
During Fandango’s Big Ticket interview with Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jacob Batalon, Holland mentioned that this is the first time he has been involved in the creative process from the very beginning.
“This time round is the first time I’ve been let into the creative process before pen has hit the page,” Holland explained. “Bringing the voice of the fans to the writers room has really given us a leg up in creating something that’s really fun and different.”
One of the primary requests from fans was for a more grounded portrayal of Spider-Man. After years of Peter battling threats tied to the broader Marvel universe, viewers expressed a desire to see the hero confront more personal challenges.
“They really wanted this street-level Spider-Man movie that felt relatable,” Holland noted. “That didn’t necessarily feel like saving the world, but maybe saving himself.”
This approach aligns perfectly with Peter Parker’s situation after ‘No Way Home’. Following Doctor Strange’s spell, the world has forgotten Peter exists. His friends MJ and Ned no longer recall their relationship with him, leaving Peter isolated as he continues his journey as Spider-Man.
Zendaya shared during the Fandango interview that the new film delves into MJ’s life after losing her memories of Peter.
“It was fun to imagine what their lives have been like since we last saw them,” she said. “And also keeping in mind that Peter is not a part of those memories or that life maybe she wanted before.”
Although MJ does not remember Peter, Zendaya confirmed that her character’s essence remains intact. Fans who appreciated MJ’s humor can look forward to that aspect returning.
“She’s still who she is at the core, so that was fun to find those moments again,” Zendaya remarked.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will also broaden Peter’s universe with new and returning characters. The film reintroduces Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, and features Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Sadie Sink’s enigmatic role remains one of the biggest mysteries, with fans speculating about a potential connection to the X-Men.
Sink shared that joining the Marvel universe felt like a dream come true but refrained from disclosing details about her character.
“I grew up watching these movies, so to join was very surreal,” she said. “I really like the character and that’s all I’ll say.”
The film will also showcase several villains from Spider-Man’s comic book history, including Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan, also known as Scorpion, along with Tombstone and other characters.
Holland explained that exploring Spider-Man comics was essential in crafting the movie. The team aimed to bring some of the most iconic comic moments to life while adapting them for the big screen.
“It presented an opportunity for us to really dive into the comics and pick out our favorite snapshots that the fans have really connected with over the years,” Holland said.
With ‘Brand New Day’, Holland aspires to present a Spider-Man story that resonates more closely with the character fans have always cherished. After losing everything, Peter Parker is no longer focused on saving the universe; he is on a quest to rebuild himself.
