Red carpet interviews are rarely predictable when Tom Holland is around, and the premiere of ‘The Odyssey’ in New York was no exception. What began as a standard chat between Jon Bernthal and a reporter quickly transformed into one of the evening’s most memorable moments, thanks to Holland’s knack for appearing where he’s least expected.

The two actors share a long history that predates their time on the set of Christopher Nolan’s epic. Bernthal and Holland first met while filming ‘Pilgrimage’ in 2017, a collaboration that famously involved them creating each other’s audition tapes. Bernthal helped Holland secure his role as Spider-Man, while Holland returned the favor for Bernthal’s audition for the Punisher.

This close friendship was evident at the New York premiere when Holland interrupted Bernthal’s interview with Extra reporter Tommy DiDario, turning a routine red carpet discussion into a lighthearted, unscripted exchange between two old friends. The clip quickly went viral, with fans enjoying Holland’s seamless entrance into his co-star’s interview.

This playful interruption fit perfectly into a night filled with lighthearted nods to Bernthal’s career. During the same conversation, Bernthal reminisced about the origins of his iconic catchphrase, tracing it back to his breakout role as Shane on ‘The Walking Dead’. He explained how writers have consistently woven that line into his scripts, including in his new role as Menelaus in ‘The Odyssey’.

The dynamic between Holland and Bernthal goes beyond inside jokes and interview interruptions. Bernthal portrays Menelaus, the Spartan king who serves as a mentor to Holland’s Telemachus in Nolan’s adaptation, creating a fitting parallel to their real-life friendship.

Bernthal has expressed deep emotions discussing Holland’s growth throughout the film’s press tour, reflecting on watching him evolve from a teenager auditioning for Marvel into one of Hollywood’s leading stars. “I know Tom since he was 17. We did our audition tapes together for Spider-Man. I could not be more proud of him, to witness him growing up, becoming the man he is, becoming the movie star that he is,” Bernthal shared with Variety on the red carpet, also praising Holland’s relationship with Zendaya and the support they provide each other.

The timing of their reunion is particularly significant as both actors are about to become very busy. In addition to sharing the screen in ‘The Odyssey’, Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle opposite Holland’s Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’, marking the first time the Punisher and Spider-Man will appear together in live action. Holland has expressed excitement about developing this new dynamic, calling it one of his favorite aspects of the upcoming film.

Fans reacting to the interview crash online have highlighted the genuine warmth between the two actors, noting how rare it is to see such authentic friendship translate so effortlessly on camera. This moment also contributes to a broader trend throughout the film’s press tour, where candid, unscripted interactions among cast members have often overshadowed the more polished, planned segments of interviews.

With both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’ set to hit theaters within weeks of each other, audiences can expect to see much more of the Holland and Bernthal duo, both on-screen and, as the New York premiere suggests, off-screen as well.
