Tom Holland’s Shirtless Scene in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Sparks Fan Buzz
Tom Holland has dedicated nearly a decade to portraying Peter Parker, maturing on screen alongside the fans who first saw him take on the role as a teenager. This long journey has provided audiences with a unique perspective on his evolution, both as an actor and in his physical appearance, making ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ feel like a significant milestone in how the character is presented.
Set years after ‘No Way Home’ left Peter forgotten by those who once cared for him, the film explores that isolation not just as an emotional theme but as a reason for a noticeably more rugged and physically tough version of the hero. The marketing for the movie teased glimpses of Holland’s new physique through trailers and set photos, but the film saved its most striking reveal for a specific scene once viewers entered theaters.
In this scene, Peter seeks out Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova at her “office,” a Russian bathhouse, hoping to enlist her help against a mind-controlling threat targeting New York City. Yelena, already undressed, instructs him to strip down and join her in the baths, both for bathhouse etiquette and to ensure he isn’t concealing any weapons. Peter complies, but only down to his mask and underwear, maintaining his identity even in a moment of complete physical exposure.
This sequence has quickly become one of the most discussed moments from the film’s early weeks, circulating widely online as fans share clips and screenshots from the scene. Reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with the moment sparking ongoing discussions about the effort that went into Holland’s physical transformation for this chapter of the character’s journey.

However, achieving that look on camera came with its own challenges. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly before the film’s release, Holland revealed that he attempted a dehydration technique used by some actors to enhance muscle definition before shirtless scenes, cutting back on water intake the day before filming after hydrating heavily the day before that.
“I tried to see if it would make a difference, and the only thing it did is it just made me really grumpy,” Holland shared, noting that he doesn’t believe the technique made a significant visible difference in the end. He also addressed the comparisons between this scene and an unlockable in-game costume from Insomniac’s Spider-Man video games that similarly features the hero in just his mask and underwear, confirming that he was aware of that reference.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has linked the film’s visual style more broadly to those same video games, noting that several action shots in the movie draw direct inspiration from some of the more striking sequences found in the games. This influence, combined with Holland’s physical changes as he approaches his thirties, has given this iteration of Spider-Man a distinctly different presence compared to his earlier roles in ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Far From Home.’
This transformation has resonated strongly with critics and audiences alike, with ‘Brand New Day’ achieving a 90% Certified Fresh score and a 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, tying it for the highest score any live-action Spider-Man film has ever received. Given the positive reception and the ongoing buzz surrounding Holland’s physique, the bathhouse scene is likely to remain one of the film’s most memorable talking points for some time.
