Tom Welling Open to ‘Smallville’ Reboot as Michael Rosenbaum Discusses Hollywood Trends
Few TV shows have left a cultural mark quite like ‘Smallville’. Debuting on The WB in 2001, it reimagined the Superman narrative as a teen drama, focusing on a young Clark Kent as he navigated his powers in a small Kansas town. Even after 25 years, fans are still eager for more.
Tom Welling portrayed Clark and was featured in every episode throughout the show’s 10-season duration, while Michael Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor. Although Rosenbaum departed after season 7 due to a contract dispute with Warner Bros., he made a guest appearance in the series finale. The two have maintained a close friendship, co-hosting the rewatch podcast ‘Talkville’, which started in 2022.
In light of the anniversary, the duo recently spoke with Variety for a “How Well Do They Know Each Other?” video. During the discussion, they were asked about the possibility of a ‘Smallville’ reboot and who might agree to it first. According to Variety, Welling expressed that he “just can’t imagine” a reboot concept that would entice him to return, but added, “Never say never.”
Rosenbaum chimed in, reflecting on the current Hollywood landscape. “They’re rebooting everything,” he remarked, a valid observation given the number of classic franchises revived in recent years.
This conversation aligns with a recurring theme. Both Welling and Rosenbaum have expressed interest in creating an animated sequel featuring the original cast voicing their characters. They have collaborated on this idea with ‘Smallville’ creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, envisioning a continuation shortly after the series finale.
Previously, Welling seemed skeptical about a live-action reboot during Rosenbaum’s podcast ‘Inside of You’, suggesting it was unlikely for a show like theirs. Reports indicated that the project was in limbo while James Gunn and Peter Safran concentrated on revitalizing the DC Universe. Nonetheless, the door remains ajar.

In an exclusive discussion with ScreenRant, Rosenbaum mentioned he plans to pitch the idea when the timing is right. He noted that Welling is on board, the entire cast is interested, and Gough and Millar are supportive as well. He suggested that it could materialize in five years.
Welling has shared similar aspirations. In his anniversary interview with the outlet, he described the animated sequel as picking up soon after the original series’ conclusion, allowing them to explore fresh developments for Clark, Lex, Lois, and the rest of the characters.

The anniversary discussion also revisited the show’s conclusion. Clark finally embraced his role as a hero, while a flash-forward depicted Lex becoming president, hinting at future confrontations. Welling mentioned he pitched an ending idea to the writers, as he felt it served as a fitting conclusion to Clark’s journey.
Both actors reflected on the show’s legacy, expressing a wish they had appreciated it more during its airing. This sentiment resonates with many fans who look back on a series that shaped a generation’s perception of Superman.
The prospect of a revival comes at a notable time for the Man of Steel. Welling’s portrayal of Clark has often been compared to other film Supermen, including Henry Cavill and David Corenswet. He has also reprised the role before, appearing alongside Erica Durance as Lois Lane in 2019.
This history indicates a strong desire for ‘Smallville’ nostalgia. Fans have been urging Welling to return since the show concluded in 2011. The current anniversary, coupled with Rosenbaum’s optimism, keeps that hope alive.
Currently, there is no official reboot or sequel in development, and any return would hinge on the right pitch at the right moment. However, “never say never” does not equate to a definitive no, and it’s clear that both stars still cherish the show.
