Toy Story 5 Dominates Box Office Again as Major Releases Arrive This Weekend
‘Toy Story 5’ is projected to maintain its top position at the box office this weekend, despite the arrival of two significant new releases. Early estimates indicate that neither ‘Supergirl’ nor ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ will pose a serious challenge to Pixar’s latest animated sequel for the No. 1 spot.
Box office forecasts suggest that ‘Toy Story 5’ could earn between $80 million and $90 million during its second weekend in North America. The film has already enjoyed a stellar debut, raking in $176 million domestically and reaching $328 million globally shortly after its release.
This impressive performance continues a successful trend for animated sequels. Recent follow-ups like ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Zootopia 2’ have emerged as some of the biggest films of their respective years, indicating that audiences are eager to revisit beloved animated worlds.
‘Supergirl’ is set to be the most formidable new competitor this weekend, with projections estimating its opening weekend earnings between $47 million and $50 million from approximately 3,600 locations. This DC superhero film marks the next major release from the new Warner Bros. DC Universe, helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The movie features Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, portrayed by Milly Alcock. The plot follows Kara as she journeys through space with Krypto the Superdog and becomes embroiled in a mission with an alien girl named Ruthye, embarking on a quest for revenge and justice.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, known for ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘Cruella’, ‘Supergirl’ is based on a script by Ana Nogueira. The film has a reported production budget of around $170 million, necessitating robust audience support to achieve financial success.
‘Supergirl’ follows last year’s ‘Superman’, which helped kickstart the new DC Universe. That film debuted with $125 million and concluded with $618 million worldwide. However, ‘Supergirl’ faces a unique challenge, as the character is less familiar to general audiences compared to Superman.

Also debuting this weekend is ‘Jackass: Best and Last’, the latest installment in the beloved comedy franchise. The film is anticipated to open with around $10 million to $12 million from 2,800 theaters.
Featuring Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Wee Man, and the rest of the Jackass crew, this film is being billed as the final chapter of the series. The franchise has cultivated a dedicated fan base over the years with its outrageous stunts, extreme challenges, and wild humor.
The new film is expected to have a smaller opening than its predecessors. ‘Jackass Forever’, released in 2022, debuted with $23 million and ultimately grossed around $80 million worldwide. However, ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ comes with a much lower production cost of about $10 million, meaning it doesn’t require a massive box office performance to turn a profit.
The summer movie season has been particularly strong, with Hollywood experiencing one of its best stretches since before the pandemic. According to Rentrak, current summer revenues are only slightly below 2019 levels, bolstered by successful original films and major franchise releases.
With more exciting films on the horizon, including new entries in popular franchises, the box office is expected to remain vibrant. For now, ‘Toy Story 5’ seems poised to continue its winning streak and remain the top choice for audiences this weekend.
