Christopher Nolan has made a name for himself with films that reward repeated viewings, and few exemplify this better than his tale of two rival magicians. ‘The Prestige’ first hit theaters on October 20, 2006, and has since garnered a dedicated fanbase. While it was a modest success upon release, it found its stride on home video, currently boasting a 77% critics score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The narrative centers on Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale), two stage magicians in Victorian London whose collaboration deteriorates after a disastrous trick. Their obsession with crafting the ultimate illusion spirals into sabotage and violence. The impressive cast also includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, Piper Perabo, and David Bowie, who delivers a memorable performance as Nikola Tesla.

Now, exactly 20 years after its original release, Disney has a special treat for fans. The studio has unveiled the first trailer for the re-release and confirmed that the film will return to theaters on January 29, 2027, featuring its inaugural 70mm and IMAX presentations.

The trailer begins with a serene image of a hand reaching for a birdcage, a fitting teaser for a film steeped in misdirection. It offers a brief glimpse rather than a full retelling, focusing on atmosphere to remind viewers of what’s ahead.

The film will be shown in 70mm and IMAX, alongside traditional 35mm and digital 2D formats, ensuring that audiences without access to the largest screens can still enjoy it. For those eager to watch it sooner, the film is currently available for streaming in 4K Ultra HD on Amazon.

The January 29 release date marks a change from earlier reports. Initially, when the re-release was announced in July, Nolan had mentioned a January 21, 2027 date. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained that the film would be enhanced to 70mm for its 20th anniversary. The new date was revealed alongside the trailer.

Nolan has emphasized the importance of the format. He noted that cinematographer Wally Pfister shot the film anamorphically on 35mm, praising both Pfister’s cinematography and Nathan Crowley’s production design. After screening a 35mm print to evaluate it, he expressed confidence that the film would look stunning when blown up to 70mm, and he highlighted Bale’s performance as one of his most underrated.

The timing of this re-release is no coincidence. Nolan recently made history with ‘The Odyssey,’ which became the first film shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film, and the success of that format has made large-screen presentations highly sought after. Bringing one of his earlier works back to these screens allows audiences to experience a familiar film in a fresh way.

This re-release also gives ‘The Prestige’ a chance at the theatrical success it arguably deserved during its initial run. The film grossed approximately $109 million worldwide against a $40 million budget and received Academy Award nominations for cinematography and art direction. For a story that has been analyzed for two decades, a new presentation on massive screens feels like the perfect encore.

The film’s iconic tagline challenges viewers to watch closely, and that’s the true allure of this re-release. It’s a thriller structured like a magic trick, featuring a pledge, a turn, and a prestige, with its twists resonating differently once you understand their mechanics.

If you’ve never experienced the film on a big screen, January presents a rare opportunity. And for those who have, the allure of witnessing Angier and Borden’s rivalry in a larger format is hard to resist. After all, the best tricks are the ones you want to see again.
