Trailer and Release Date Unveiled for Idris Elba’s Survival Thriller ‘Above the Below’
Idris Elba has become synonymous with survival stories on screen. From facing a lion in ‘Beast’ to navigating the wilderness in ‘The Mountain Between Us,’ he has tackled numerous high-stakes scenarios. Now, he steps into a dual role as both actor and director in a gripping survival narrative set in two of the most challenging environments imaginable.
The film began to take shape in 2023 when Lionsgate announced it at the American Film Market, with Elba co-directing alongside Martin Owen. This marks Elba’s second feature as a director, following his debut with 2018’s ‘Yardie.’ Owen, known for ‘The Loneliest Boy in the World,’ conceived the original idea, and production took place at Pinewood Studios, utilizing the studio’s underwater stage.
Fans can now catch a glimpse of the film, as Lionsgate has released the first trailer for ‘Above the Below,’ which is set to hit theaters on December 4, 2026. This announcement followed a poster reveal that confirmed the release date and the trailer’s debut.

The storyline is both straightforward and intense. Three astronauts survive a catastrophic re-entry from space, only to find themselves trapped in a capsule sinking into the ocean’s crushing depths, with their oxygen supply dwindling. As time runs out, they must make harrowing decisions about who will risk everything to escape and who may have to be left behind.
The trailer begins with a tense exchange between mission commander Jackson, portrayed by Elba, and pilot Brookes, played by Caitlin FitzGerald. It escalates into a race against time, culminating in Jackson questioning how far someone would go to survive. One early description likens it to ‘Gravity’ meets ‘Whalefall,’ aptly capturing the film’s transition from the void of space to the depths of the ocean.
Joining Elba are FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the third astronaut, Rhodes. Isla Jackson-Ritchie is also part of the cast. The screenplay is penned by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, while Matt Williams and Gina Carter serve as producers.
The film is concise, running for 85 minutes and rated R, fitting for a claustrophobic thriller where tension arises from confined spaces and dwindling air. Producer Matt Williams has described it as a thrilling rollercoaster that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
Interestingly, the film’s release coincides with David Harbour’s holiday action sequel ‘Violent Night 2’ and Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!,’ featuring Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde. Currently slated for a limited theatrical release, its straightforward, high-concept premise could attract audiences looking for an alternative to larger holiday films.
This strategy aligns well with the survival genre, which often thrives on simple yet compelling narratives and strong performances. With a lead actor capable of carrying a high-stakes story and a premise centered around a ticking clock, the film promises to deliver an exhilarating cinematic experience.
What stands out is the stark contrast between the two environments. Space and the ocean are both inhospitable to human life without proper equipment, and the film places its characters in both perilous situations. The poster reinforces this theme, showcasing Elba in a spacesuit, with bubbles on one side and stars on the other.
For Elba, this project also represents an opportunity to showcase his skills as a filmmaker alongside Owen. Both have described their directing partnership as a true collaboration, and the trailer hints at a film with a distinctive visual style.
