‘Unabomber’ Netflix Debut Crowe’s Film Tops Charts but Falls Short Overall
Netflix has a proven strategy when it comes to true crime, and the debut of ‘Unabomber’ is a testament to its effectiveness. Historically, original films or shows about real-life criminals tend to land in the top 10 on the platform. Recently, Netflix has shifted its focus toward mid-budget films instead of high-budget blockbusters.
‘Unabomber’ premiered on September 25, directed by Janus Metz and featuring Russell Crowe, Jacob Tremblay, Annabelle Wallis, and Shailene Woodley. The film dramatizes the life of Ted Kaczynski, delving into his early years at Harvard, where he was admitted at just 16, beyond the FBI investigation.
The initial viewership numbers are in, revealing that the film garnered 16.4 million views within its first three days on Netflix, securing the top spot on the weekly English film chart. It also led the charts in over 70 territories, but its debut places it in the middle tier of 2026 movie releases.
According to a ranking from What’s on Netflix, ‘Unabomber’ debuted at 12th among 20 films released this year. ‘The Rip’ tops the list, followed by ‘War Machine’, ‘Apex’, and ‘Thrash’, all significantly ahead of Crowe’s thriller.
In comparison, ‘Unabomber’ is just behind ‘People We Meet on Vacation’, which has 17.2 million views, and ahead of ‘Swapped’ at 15.5 million. Other films like ‘The Last House’ and ‘The Whisper Man’ debuted with significantly higher numbers, nearing 100 million views despite mixed reviews.
What’s on Netflix described the launch as mediocre, noting that September’s biggest film did not achieve a massive debut despite its star-studded cast. It remains to be seen whether the second week will see a rebound or a significant decline.

The film unfolds across two timelines. In the Harvard storyline, Tremblay portrays the young Kaczynski, a math prodigy involved in ethically dubious psychological experiments led by professor Henry Murray, played by Crowe, alongside his collaborator Christiana Morgan, portrayed by Wallis.
In the 1990s timeline, Woodley plays FBI agent Joanne Miller, who is on the trail of the Unabomber. Netflix describes the film as inspired by true events rather than a direct historical account.
Metz has shared his reasoning for casting Tremblay, stating in Netflix Tudum that he found the actor “absolutely spellbinding” after seeing him in ‘Sovereign’. This film also marks Crowe’s first leading role in a Netflix production.

Critics have not been kind. The Hollywood Reporter criticized the film’s portrayal of Kaczynski’s radicalization as simplistic and noted that Tremblay and Crowe needed more opportunities to confront each other. Variety echoed this sentiment, labeling the film a formulaic Netflix true-crime retread.

Audience reception has been lukewarm as well. The film ties with 1995’s ‘Virtuosity’ for Crowe’s third-lowest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers criticizing its historical inaccuracies, including a gender-swapped FBI character. This negative feedback has somewhat overshadowed the goodwill Crowe built with his previous film ‘The Weight’, which received the best reviews he’s had in nearly three decades.
