‘Verity’ Star Dakota Johnson’s Birthday Moment on ‘SNL’ Offers Behind-the-Scenes Look
Dakota Johnson has a rich history with ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and her latest hosting gig added another memorable chapter. She first took the stage as host in 2015 and returned in January 2024, also making a cameo in Season 51 as “Madeline” during Lily Allen’s performance.
This weekend marked her third time hosting, with Turnstile making their musical guest debut. The occasion was particularly special as her birthday falls on October 4, making her just the sixth host in the show’s history to celebrate her birthday on air. Johnson even shared with Vogue that her birthday would officially begin during the live broadcast.
Fans were treated to a glimpse of the preparations leading up to the show. ‘SNL’ shared an Instagram photo of Johnson getting ready in a stunning red dress, captured from behind in front of a lit vanity mirror. A handwritten sign taped to the mirror read “Happy Birthday Dakota,” along with a “Happy Birthday” message from a fan account overlaying the image.

The glossy red dress was a highlight on stage as well. During her opening monologue, Johnson donned a red latex dress and humorously remarked that she would celebrate her birthday at midnight by standing in midtown in a latex dress looking for attention. This self-aware quip perfectly matched the show’s tone.

Her monologue also touched on the ups and downs of her recent career. Johnson joked about still promoting ‘Madame Web,’ her last project, because it hasn’t performed well at the box office yet. She then humorously referenced her dating history with musicians, setting the stage for the biggest surprise of the night.
Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance during Johnson’s monologue, and the duo exchanged playful banter about their friendship. Swift excitedly announced that it was Johnson’s birthday, albeit a bit early since midnight had not yet arrived. At the end of the episode, she surprised Johnson with a birthday cake during the goodnights segment.
This cameo comes after weeks of close moments between the two. Johnson co-stars in Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video and presented Swift with an award at the VMAs just days before the show. For fans of their friendship, the backstage sign felt like part of a larger celebration.

Johnson was on the show to promote ‘Verity,’ a thriller co-starring Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. The film opened in theaters the day before and is projected to earn $33.6 million over its opening weekend, potentially securing the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. This would mark the best domestic debut in eight years for a film starring Johnson, since ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ in 2018.

While the movie has received mixed reviews, currently sitting at 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, a strong opening would bring good news for Amazon MGM Studios, which produced the film for $40 million. Johnson even joked about the film in her monologue, referencing a make-out scene with a newly pregnant Hathaway.
The backstage moment also has a family connection. In her first monologue in 2015, Johnson revealed that her mother, Melanie Griffith, hosted ‘SNL’ in December 1988, and that her father, Don Johnson, proposed to her again backstage after the show. She humorously noted that she was likely conceived that night.
This backstory adds a deeper significance to the backstage photo taken on her birthday. The show has been intertwined with her family history for decades, and now it has become part of her birthday celebrations as well.
Johnson is now one step closer to joining the show’s Five-Timers Club, giving fans something exciting to anticipate. In the meantime, her night in Studio 8H featured a memorable monologue, a surprise Swift cameo, and a birthday cake.
