‘VisionQuest’ References Daredevil and Reveals Paladin’s Intriguing History
The MCU thrives on its interconnected storytelling, where a seemingly casual line in one series can link to characters in entirely different realms. The recent reference to Daredevil in ‘VisionQuest’ exemplifies this clever narrative weaving.
‘VisionQuest’ serves as the concluding chapter of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along.’ This 8-episode Disney+ series follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision on his quest for identity, while a bounty hunter named Paladin, portrayed by Todd Stashwick, is hot on his trail. Paladin is notable for his comic book origins, first appearing in ‘Daredevil’ #150 back in 1978, crafted by Jim Shooter and Carmine Infantino.
In episode 3, titled ‘Reboot,’ which was released on October 20 alongside episode 4, ‘Malware,’ a conversation unfolds between Paladin and his Handler, played by Diane Morgan. This exchange reveals that Paladin has crossed paths with three significant Marvel characters, including Daredevil.

The dialogue serves as a puzzle piece, with the Handler referencing a concussion Paladin sustained from a steel fiber billy club, a clear nod to Daredevil’s iconic weapon. Paladin quips about needing to leave Hell’s Kitchen if he can’t handle the heat, directly alluding to Matt Murdock’s territory in New York City.
This exchange also hints at Frank Castle, as the Handler recalls a time Paladin had shrapnel removed from his gut in Brooklyn, referring to it as a rough disagreement with an old friend, subtly indicating the Punisher. Additionally, there’s a nod to Werewolf by Night through a joke about bite marks from a creature that is part man, part wolf.
Moreover, the Handler suggests sending a gift basket to the Ten Rings Syndicate for providing Paladin’s adamantium chest armor, linking him to Xialing’s organization from ‘Shang-Chi.’ This detail also aligns with the adamantium rounds Paladin used against Vision in episode 2.
The reference to Daredevil resonates due to the character’s background. In the comics, Paladin is a mercenary often at odds with street-level heroes, including Spider-Man, and his design bears similarities to Charlie Cox’s costume in the MCU. ‘VisionQuest’ portrays him as ‘a Paladin’ rather than ‘the Paladin,’ suggesting a long lineage of hunters, leaving ample space for past encounters.
Screen Rant previously noted that Paladin is the third antagonist from Daredevil that the MCU has reimagined for a storyline that doesn’t involve Matt Murdock. However, ‘VisionQuest’ is set far from Hell’s Kitchen, making it easy for the series to overlook Daredevil entirely. Instead, the writers cleverly incorporated a single line to connect Paladin with Murdock’s world.

Charlie Cox’s portrayal of Daredevil has been prominent in the MCU since his debut in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ He has also appeared in ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ and led ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ with its second season airing from March to May this year. A third season is reportedly completed and set to premiere next March.
Cox has indicated that Marvel wants him to focus on that series for the time being. He has stated he is not part of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and humorously mentioned that he is also not in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ although he acknowledged that the MCU often keeps fans guessing. In this context, a verbal nod in ‘VisionQuest’ is one of the few ways to keep his character relevant in the broader conversation without requiring the actor’s presence.

As for ‘VisionQuest,’ the story is only halfway through. The series continues weekly, with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ airing on October 27, ‘Immolation’ on November 3, and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on November 10. Paladin’s enigmatic client remains a mystery, and as more of his past is revealed, it increasingly connects with the larger MCU.
