‘VisionQuest’ Showrunner Discusses Ultron’s Return and Creative Decisions
Marvel Television has been gradually reconstructing Vision’s narrative over the past few years, initially through ‘WandaVision’ and later with ‘Agatha All Along.’ Each installment has contributed to the evolution of a character whose identity has been in flux since his debut in the MCU. This slow-burn storytelling approach culminates in the franchise’s latest series, revealing a significant creative decision behind it.
‘VisionQuest‘ continues the saga of White Vision, portrayed by Paul Bettany, who emerged from ‘WandaVision’ with all of the original Vision’s memories but lacking the emotional connections that once defined him. Showrunner Terry Matalas describes the series as the concluding chapter of a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision,’ focusing on Vision’s quest for identity now that Wanda is no longer in his life.
The absence of Wanda posed a genuine creative challenge for Matalas during the show’s development, as Vision has historically relied on a strong counterpart for dramatic interaction. Matalas shared how he addressed this issue, detailing the thought process that led him back to one of the character’s most iconic foes.
“Well, we don’t have Wanda, and we need someone really strong for Vision to play off of,” Matalas explained to Empire. He continued, “Within a millisecond, I was like, ‘It’s [James] Spader.’ Then everything else started to fall into place.”
This decision reintroduces Ultron, the villainous AI voiced by Spader in 2015’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ as a pivotal figure in Vision’s new journey. The choice carries significant dramatic weight due to the characters’ history, as Ultron originally created Vision’s synthetic body before the Avengers intervened, repurposing it with Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. program.
Vision ultimately triumphed over Ultron at the conclusion of the character’s debut film, though Ultron’s demise occurred off-screen, leaving room for this kind of return. Matalas has also indicated that this version of Vision is fully aware of Wanda’s fate following the events of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ humorously noting that the character has simply “watched all the movies.” This detail is underscored by a scene in the show’s trailer where Vision is seen watching ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in a home theater.
In addition to Ultron, ‘VisionQuest’ incorporates several other AI personas associated with Tony Stark’s legacy, bringing to life characters like J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and E.D.I.T.H. as Vision navigates his fractured identity within an internal virtual reality. Bettany has previously praised the opportunity to reunite with Spader for the project, describing his co-star as “delicious” to work with and crediting Matalas for understanding Vision’s role as an outsider that resonates with audiences.
Matalas has positioned the series as a chance for Marvel to embrace genuine creative risks, echoing sentiments Bettany has expressed about the franchise being rewarded for bold storytelling choices. Reintroducing one of the MCU’s most memorable villains as Vision’s primary foil certainly aligns with that vision.
With Ultron confirmed as a central figure in Vision’s journey toward self-discovery, ‘VisionQuest’ appears set to offer one of the more introspective and thematically rich entries in Marvel Television’s expanding lineup.
