Wade Wilson’s Return Confirmed by Marvel Executive for ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2
Few characters in the Marvel universe garner the level of enthusiasm that Deadpool does, and fans of the Merc with a Mouth are currently enjoying more than they anticipated. ‘X-Men ’97,’ the Disney+ revival of the cherished 1990s animated series, was hailed as one of the MCU’s finest streaming offerings upon its debut, successfully recapturing the intoxicating mix of melodrama and superhero action that made its predecessor so beloved.
With season 2 confirmed and a July premiere approaching, excitement was already at a peak. Then the trailer was released, and Wade Wilson entered the conversation.
The first trailer for ‘X-Men ’97‘ season 2 debuted in May 2026, quickly creating a buzz with a brief yet electrifying moment featuring Morph, the shapeshifting mutant whose abilities have become one of the show’s most versatile storytelling devices.
In a newly released trailer shot, Morph adopts Deadpool’s appearance to battle an insect-like creature, leading many fans to speculate that the enemy might belong to the alien species known as The Brood. This revelation sent the fandom into a frenzy, raising the question of whether the real Wade Wilson could finally be making his animated debut.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant’s Liam Crowley, who moderated the ‘X-Men ’97’ season 2 panel at the Tribeca Film Festival, Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise, was directly asked about the Deadpool cameo and whether fans are closer to finally seeing the real deal in the animated universe.
Winderbaum’s response was cryptic yet exciting, stating, “You never know… There are some fun plot lines coming up for some other characters that you caught only brief glimpses of in the OG series that I am so flippin’ excited to get on screen.”
It’s important to note that the ‘X-Men ’97’ creative team initially faced limitations regarding the inclusion of Deadpool. When Screen Rant spoke with Winderbaum in May 2024, he explained that introducing the character would have required “an insanely compelling reason,” partly because ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘X-Men ’97’ were being developed concurrently.
The executive also acknowledged that Deadpool had made a brief appearance in the original animated series, but the character’s name was never spoken due to the strict regulations governing 1990s Marvel cartoons.
Regarding broader Marvel cameos in season 2, Winderbaum emphasized that the show’s world-building simmers in the background rather than taking center stage, noting that the Avengers and other characters exist in the universe, and unexpected collisions are always part of the fun, much like reading Marvel Comics.
Season 2 will see the X-Men navigating through time and space after the season 1 finale, facing a much more formidable foe in Apocalypse, whose arc will span from ancient origins to a post-apocalyptic future.
Looking beyond season 2, the outlook is promising for Deadpool fans. A third season of ‘X-Men ’97’ has already been confirmed, and the creative team is also developing a fourth, providing Wade Wilson ample opportunity for a proper animated appearance in the future. On the live-action front, Reynolds is reportedly brainstorming ideas for a team-up film featuring the character as a supporting role rather than the lead.
Whether animation will beat live-action to the punch this time remains one of Marvel’s most intriguing open questions, so let us know in the comments: do you believe Deadpool deserves a full-fledged ‘X-Men ’97’ storyline, or should Wade’s animated cameos remain brief, leaving fans eager for the real thing?
