Watch Pinocchio Unstrung Release Date and Details for the Horror Reimagining
A fresh glimpse at ‘Pinocchio Unstrung’ has surfaced, showcasing the extent to which this dark reimagining of the iconic wooden puppet will venture. Rather than a charming fairy tale about becoming a real boy, this upcoming horror film transforms Pinocchio into a menacing figure ensnared in a violent nightmare, complete with practical effects, chaos, and slasher-style horror.
Set to hit theaters on July 24, the film is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most extreme entries in the expanding Twisted Childhood Universe. This shared horror franchise takes well-known childhood characters and reinterprets their narratives with a much darker twist.
Written and directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who has worked on several projects within the same universe, ‘Pinocchio Unstrung’ draws inspiration from Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 tale, ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’, but shifts the tone dramatically, transforming the beloved character into a terrifying version of himself.
The newly released footage emphasizes the film’s violent aesthetic and highlights its practical approach to horror. Instead of relying heavily on computer-generated effects, the production team crafted a physical animatronic puppet for Pinocchio, aiming to create a more tangible and unsettling presence on screen.
The intention was to make viewers feel as though they were witnessing a real wooden creature rather than a digital fabrication. This practical design is anticipated to be a significant element of the film’s horror style.
The narrative presents a drastically different take on Pinocchio. In this adaptation, Geppetto creates the magical puppet and introduces him to his grandson, James. Initially, Pinocchio forms a bond with the boy, but their relationship takes a dark turn when James exposes him to the outside world.
As Pinocchio grapples with understanding human behavior, emotions, and morality, he embarks on a violent mission driven by his own warped sense of justice. His aspiration to become a real boy evolves into something much more sinister.
A synopsis reveals that Pinocchio embarks on a destructive path influenced by a world he struggles to comprehend. This version of the character diverges significantly from the classic tale, replacing themes of kindness and growth with fear and brutality.
The cast features Jack Art Gray as Pinocchio, alongside horror icons Robert Englund and Richard Brake in pivotal voice roles. Englund lends his voice to the Cricket, while Brake portrays Geppetto. The film also includes performances by Cameron Bell, Jessica Balmer, and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney.
‘Pinocchio Unstrung’ premiered at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival on April 11. Following its festival showing, the film is gearing up for a broader release in North America through Viva Pictures, with ITN Distribution managing international releases.
Initially announced in 2024 as part of the Twisted Childhood Universe expansion, this project has garnered attention for transforming familiar characters into horror figures, offering audiences a radically different perspective on the stories they cherished.
With its disturbing reinterpretation of Pinocchio, extensive practical effects, and slasher-inspired approach, ‘Pinocchio Unstrung’ aims to redefine a childhood favorite as one of the most bizarre horror releases of the year. Fans will discover on July 24 whether this dark experiment can successfully reinvent one of the world’s most renowned fictional characters.
