‘House of the Dragon‘ has consistently used a visual cue to indicate Valyrian heritage: the iconic silver-white hair that has been passed down through generations of the Targaryen family. So when Prince Daeron made his long-awaited debut on screen, fans quickly noticed something was amiss, and it wasn’t related to the plot.

Instead of the expected platinum hair shared by his siblings, Daeron appeared with reddish-brown locks, prompting a flurry of reactions online.

Daeron’s introduction in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 showcased a significant departure from the traditional silver hair of the Targaryens. Fans flocked to social media, expressing everything from confusion to outright disbelief that the brown-haired character was indeed him.

Rather than the signature silver Targaryen hair fans anticipated, the young prince sported a striking head of ginger or red hair, reminiscent of his mother rather than the typical Targaryen lineage. The scene unfolded quietly, with Daeron positioned behind Lord Ormund Hightower during a tense camp exchange, but sharp-eyed viewers immediately spotted the change.

One viewer admitted they initially mistook him for a random background character, only realizing later that the red-haired figure was the much-anticipated prince. Others humorously speculated that it might just be a wig that would vanish by the next episode.

Actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who portrays Daeron, garnered praise for embodying the essence of ‘Daeron the Daring’ from the books, despite his limited screen time. Nevertheless, his hair color overshadowed nearly every other aspect of his introduction.

The source material provides little room for justifying this change. In the books, the character is described as having the signature silver hair of the Targaryens.

George R.R. Martin does not indicate that Daeron lacks the characteristic silver hair associated with House Targaryen in his writings. Given that all three of his siblings possess Valyrian features, it seems odd that Daeron would not share them. This inconsistency led fans to search for in-universe explanations rather than attributing it solely to a costume department decision.

What makes this situation even more puzzling is that Daeron’s brothers, Aemond and Aegon, have white hair, making him the visual outlier of the family on screen. This contrast has fueled speculation that a larger narrative twist is being set up.

Interestingly, the show provided an answer a few episodes later. In the third episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3, viewers discover that Ormund had a boy dye his hair white to impersonate Daeron and deliver him to Daemon Targaryen.

This revelation opens the door for fans to theorize about an even bigger switch. It raises the question of whether Ormund could have also dyed the real Daeron’s hair brown to keep him hidden from the Blacks.

Daeron was sent to Oldtown as a child, which is why even his mother, Alicent Hightower, is unsure of his current appearance. This detail reframes the entire mystery, as even his own family has been kept in the dark about what he truly looks like for years.

Beyond the hair dye theory, some sources have linked Daeron’s hair color to Alicent’s parenting decisions. His different hair could raise questions about his true parentage, leading some to view him as a bastard. This might explain why Alicent sent him away to Oldtown, opting to have him raised among her Hightower relatives instead of alongside his siblings in King’s Landing.

This also casts a new light on Alicent’s accusations against Rhaenyra, whose sons Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are often presumed to be bastards due to their darker features, which are not typically associated with House Targaryen. If Alicent’s own son lacks the signature silver hair, her previous attacks on Rhaenyra’s children appear much more hypocritical.

Considering the Hightowers’ emphasis on appearances, Daeron’s absence for much of the show becomes less surprising. Whether this was a strategic cover-up or simply a trait inherited from his mother’s side remains one of the season’s most discussed mysteries.

With Ormund’s hair dye scheme now confirmed on screen and Daeron’s true appearance still a mystery, do you think the real prince is secretly hiding platinum locks beneath Ormund’s influence, or is Alicent’s son simply a Hightower through and through?
