Why Is Everyone Tuning Out? ‘The Four Seasons’ Faces Major Viewership Decline in Season 2 Premiere Week
The future of ‘The Four Seasons’ remains uncertain, yet there are still reasons for fans to remain optimistic.
Netflix has not officially confirmed a third season for the comedy series, but many viewers are already curious about what lies ahead after Season 2. Although the latest season did not draw the same audience as its debut, its positive reviews and Netflix’s recent approach to comedy renewals indicate that the story may not be finished just yet.
Created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield, ‘The Four Seasons’ is based on the 1981 film of the same name written and directed by Alan Alda. The series chronicles a close-knit group of longtime friends whose regular getaways become increasingly complicated as relationships evolve and personal challenges arise.
Season 2 continued to develop those friendships while introducing new drama, romance, and emotional moments. The cast features Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney, Marco Calvani, Erika Henningsen, Colman Domingo, Steve Carell, Steven Pasquale, and David Tennant.
According to viewership data, Season 2 saw a significant drop compared to the first season. Reports indicate that the audience for the second season’s opening week fell by approximately 63 percent from the show’s debut season. In previous years, such a decline might have led Netflix to quickly cancel a series.
However, Netflix’s strategy has evolved in recent years, particularly regarding comedy shows. Several comedy series have been renewed despite lower-than-expected viewing numbers. Because of this shift, industry observers are not dismissing the possibility of a third season for ‘The Four Seasons.’
One frequently cited example is ‘A Man on the Inside.’ That series reportedly experienced an even larger viewership decline, around 66 percent, and did not significantly impact Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings. Nevertheless, Netflix still opted to renew the show for another season.
This comparison has sparked some optimism among fans of ‘The Four Seasons.’ While the audience numbers may not be as robust as before, Netflix has demonstrated that viewership is not always the sole factor in renewal decisions.
Critical reception has also played a role in the show’s favor. Season 2 currently boasts an 88 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s critics consensus states, “Finding renewed purpose after a major loss, ‘The Four Seasons’ balances laughter and heartbreak with the confidence of a show settling comfortably into its own rhythm.”

Meanwhile, Metacritic assigned the season a score of 77 out of 100 based on critic reviews, indicating generally favorable reactions.
Positive reviews can often enhance a series’ value to a streaming platform, particularly when it comes to attracting long-term viewers and maintaining a strong reputation.
For now, Netflix has not disclosed whether ‘The Four Seasons’ will return. Still, given its critical acclaim, recognizable cast, and Netflix’s recent history of renewing comedy series despite lower viewership numbers, a third season remains a realistic possibility.
Until an official announcement is made, fans will have to wait and see if the group of friends will reunite for another vacation and another chapter of their story.
