Why OA Vanished From ‘FBI’ and the Shocking Plan Behind His Departure
Fans have been curious about OA’s absence on ‘FBI’ for some time, and the reasons have evolved over the seasons. What started as a mysterious disappearance from a few episodes has turned into one of the most significant twists the long-running CBS procedural has executed.
Special Agent Omar Adom “OA” Zidan, portrayed by Zeeko Zaki, has been a staple of the series since its launch in 2018. His sudden exit from the team in the Season 8 finale was particularly shocking, leaving viewers eager for clarity on whether this beloved character was truly gone for good.
The initial concern arose during Season 7 when OA seemed to vanish, prompting fans to speculate about his fate and whether Zeeko was leaving the show. At that time, there was no dramatic reason for his absence. Both OA and Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille were missing in Season 7, Episode 12, “Manhunt,” and their absence was attributed to budget cuts that limited the number of episodes actors could film each season.
This explanation was more practical than narrative-driven. OA returned in Episode 13 and later appeared in Episode 14, titled “Hitched.” Fans who feared the worst were relieved to see their favorite agent back in action, and CBS had already expressed long-term confidence in the show by renewing ‘FBI’ for three additional seasons in April 2024, covering Seasons 7, 8, and 9.
The real shock came with the Season 8 finale, titled “Defector.” OA and Maggie were instructed to act as if a previous bus incident never occurred, which infuriated OA, leading him to confront ADIC Lawrence Green and label him “a disgrace to the bureau.” In response, Green fired OA on the spot.
The firing was triggered by OA’s resistance to orders to move on from the dubious Anna Vorpe and her team, who possessed a serum that could have saved a bus full of passengers exposed to a lethal biochemical. OA’s farewell to the team felt abrupt and unjust, which was precisely the intention.
The finale turned everything on its head. It was revealed that Maggie and Isobel orchestrated this scenario so OA could go undercover within Anna’s strike team. Only Maggie and Isobel were aware of the true plan, with others expected to be informed at the Season 9 premiere.
So, where has OA been since then? In an interview with TV Insider, Zaki shared that three months have elapsed since the last season’s conclusion, during which OA has been undercover and entirely disconnected from his team. This isolation is central to the new storyline.

Zaki also discussed the significance of this assignment for his character. He expressed a desire to “pretend, maybe, to be a bad guy for a little while,” indicating it offers new challenges for him. This represents a notable shift for an agent whose moral compass has always been a defining trait.
This undercover assignment is not intended to be a brief detour. Zaki confirmed it extends beyond a single episode. Showrunner Mike Weiss mentioned that OA will eventually return to the team, transformed by his experiences, and it will be up to Maggie, Scola, Eva, and the rest to help him regain his former self.
For those concerned that Zaki is quietly exiting the show, there’s no need to worry. After the finale, Weiss confirmed that Zaki is not leaving, but hinted that fans might see him in different settings at the start of Season 9. The rumors of his departure turned out to be clever misdirection.
However, this shake-up does create a gap in the team. Maggie Bell will partner with Isaiah Green, played by Roland Buck III from ‘Chicago Med,’ while OA remains undercover. CBS hints that Maggie will struggle to connect with her new partner while OA adapts to his new role.
The season also kicked off with a crossover. ‘FBI’ Season 9 premiered on Monday, October 5, featuring CIA Deputy Chief of Station Nikki Reynard in the premiere to assist with an investigation. Zaki mentioned that Maggie is definitely having a hard time without OA. The partnership that fans cherish is clearly being tested, but it seems to be on pause rather than permanently broken.
So, what truly happened to OA on ‘FBI’? It’s a tale of a fake firing, a perilous double life, and a partnership under strain. With Maggie working alongside a new agent and OA navigating a dangerous world with Anna, will he return unchanged, or will the partner who comes back be someone Maggie hardly recognizes?
