Apple TV has established a unique reputation for taking bold risks with genre projects that resist easy categorization. This trend continues with ‘Widow’s Bay’, a horror-comedy set on a secluded New England island where wifi is scarce, cellular reception is spotty, and the supernatural is always lurking.

The series follows Mayor Tom Loftis, portrayed by Matthew Rhys, who is in denial about his struggling coastal town being cursed, only to confront increasingly undeniable supernatural occurrences. Since its premiere, the show has gained acclaim for its unpredictability, seamlessly shifting tones and genres with each episode.

This shapeshifting nature is intentional. Creator Katie Dippold, who has been developing this concept for nearly two decades, drew inspiration from a specific childhood feeling: the exhilarating, shared thrill of being scared with friends on a summer night.

The outcome is a series that defies classification as either pure horror or straightforward comedy, and this refusal has become its greatest asset. Dippold has described the series as influenced by a variety of sources, telling TechRadar: “I’m obsessed with Jaws. Like I want to live there, which most people wouldn’t because there’s a shark that’s gonna kill you. But I want to be there.”

Now, with episode eight, ‘Your Baggage’, that tonal ambition has resulted in what might be the season’s most rewarding hour yet. The episode follows Tom and his unexpected ally Wyck as they seem to have put the island’s long-standing curse to rest after defeating a colonial-era evil named Richard Warren. It begins on a lighter note, with the weather improving and the mayor surprisingly getting along with his former adversary, creating a false sense of peace in Widow’s Bay. However, that peace is short-lived.

What ‘Your Baggage’ truly offers is a full-fledged slasher episode centered around Kate O’Flynn’s Patricia, Tom’s quirky assistant and arguably the show’s most beloved character. The Boogeyman, a notorious serial killer from Patricia’s past, resurfaces after a break-in at the history museum, intent on finishing what he started. This sends Patricia fleeing through the streets of Widow’s Bay in her pajamas, armed with little more than a rechargeable taser. The Boogeyman is designed as a clear nod to slasher legends like Michael Myers and Ghostface, silently and relentlessly pursuing his target across the island.

The effectiveness of the episode lies in how O’Flynn approaches the material. As the Boogeyman’s reluctant final girl, Patricia takes her role seriously, tracking the killer through an ambulance, a morgue, and a crematorium, all while Enya’s ‘Caribbean Blue’ plays over the chase in one of the episode’s most darkly humorous moments.

Instead of portraying her as a helpless victim, O’Flynn embraces Patricia’s frustration and practicality, transforming the pursuit into a comedic adventure rather than a conventional horror scene, even stopping to pay for gas before using it to set her attacker ablaze.

In an interview with TheWrap, creator Katie Dippold revealed that the episode was initially conceived as a flashback depicting Patricia’s teenage encounter with the Boogeyman, but the idea evolved significantly: “The thought of her sprinting through the streets with this man slowly following her just really made us laugh.” This shift proved fruitful. After a season of being overlooked, Patricia’s storyline culminates in a moment of true catharsis, effectively transforming her from the town outcast into its unexpected hero.

Filming the chase sequence was physically demanding for O’Flynn, who told TechRadar that it took two nights to shoot and that she lost her voice on the first night from all the screaming. The physical effort is evident in the final product, which boasts a breathless, committed energy that distinguishes it from the more subdued scares seen in earlier episodes.

Director Hiro Murai, whom Dippold has referred to as her “dream director” for the project, has received praise throughout the season for maintaining the show’s unusual tone grounded and atmospheric rather than campy. His involvement across five episodes has provided ‘Widow’s Bay’ with a visual consistency that holds firm even as the genre shifts.

For those hoping the Boogeyman’s defeat signifies a clean resolution, the episode makes it clear that Widow’s Bay still has more to reveal. Dippold has indicated that while the episode’s closing moments show Tom celebrating what seems like a new beginning, the situation is far from resolved. The island’s curse is complex, and ‘Your Baggage’ confirms that vanquishing one threat does not unravel the larger mystery at the heart of the show.
