Few shows have experienced a journey quite like ‘Widow’s Bay.’ This comedy-horror series, which premiered quietly on Apple TV, quickly took the awards season by storm, making the anticipation for its return undeniable. Now, the lead actor has provided an update, and fans eager for the next ‘Widow’s Bay’ release window will need to exercise some patience.

Created by Katie Dippold, the series debuted on April 29 and follows Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), who is determined to revive his struggling island town while grappling with a supernatural curse. Apple TV renewed the show on June 11, just days before the finale aired on June 17. The first season concluded with a shocking twist, revealing Tom’s son Evan as the last living descendant of Richard Warren.

The series had a historic night at the Emmys, winning a record 14 awards, the most ever for a comedy series in a single year, surpassing the 13 won by ‘The Studio’ last year. It took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award, along with wins for Rhys, Stephen Root, Kate O’Flynn, Dippold, and director Hiro Murai.

In an exclusive interview with The Direct while promoting his new Paramount+ animated series ‘Golden Axe,’ Rhys addressed when fans can expect the show’s return. His response was straightforward: “It’ll be 2028, because we don’t start shooting ’til April of next year,” he told The Direct.

Rhys mentioned that the cast has been informed filming will commence at the end of April 2027. He humorously noted that the writers, who have only recently reconvened, likely don’t yet know what happens next, urging them to get moving. This candid update comes from someone who is both the star and an executive producer of the show.

A 2028 target aligns with the show’s history. Filming for the first season took place in Massachusetts from May to August 2025, with the series not premiering until April 29, 2026. If the next set of episodes follows a similar timeline, wrapping production around August 2027, a spring 2028 premiere seems plausible.

This would result in approximately a two-year gap between seasons. Earlier updates hinted at the same timeline, with Rhys sharing on ‘Today’ that filming would start in April 2027, while co-star Kate O’Flynn suggested a more optimistic March 2027. Dippold also confirmed in August that the writers’ room had assembled and was three weeks into their work.

Rhys acknowledged the frustration fans feel regarding the long waits between seasons. He pointed out that streaming services invest heavily and prefer to assess a show’s performance before committing, which often results in extended gaps between seasons. This is a known issue with Apple TV.

For instance, ‘Severance’ premiered in 2022 and didn’t return until 2025, while ‘Dark Matter’ also experienced a two-year gap between seasons. Given the acclaim ‘Widow’s Bay’ has received, the wait may feel even more prolonged.

The delay follows a remarkable year for Rhys, who won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Widow’s Bay’ and also took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for ‘The Beast in Me.’ He made history as the first individual to win lead acting Emmys across limited, comedy, and drama series, having previously won for ‘The Americans.’

Root also celebrated his first Emmy win, taking home the award for supporting actor for his role as the rugged fisherman Wyck, while O’Flynn won for her portrayal of Patricia. With such high expectations, the pressure is on for the upcoming season. While no plot details have been disclosed yet, the finale left numerous mysteries for the writers to delve into.

For now, fans should consider rewatching the first season while awaiting production updates. If Rhys’ timeline is accurate, filming will kick off next spring, and new episodes should be expected sometime in 2028. Until then, Mayor Tom Loftis remains in limbo.
