Freeform’s latest supernatural drama has finally arrived, and fans are already curious about its future. ‘Coven Academy‘ premieres on Thursday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, perfectly timed to kick off the spooky season.

The pressing question for viewers is whether ‘Coven Academy’ will be renewed for a second season. As of now, the available coverage indicates this is just the first season, and no renewal announcement has been made. Here’s the current status of the series, along with release time, streaming details, and a sneak peek of what’s to come.

Discussions about a second season might be premature since the show has just premiered. Episode guides reveal a single season consisting of 10 episodes, each running for about 30 minutes. So far, there are no indications of a renewal, meaning any future seasons will depend on audience reception.

Freeform has a history of making quick renewal decisions. For instance, ‘Shadowhunters’ premiered in January 2016 and was renewed for a second season by March of that same year. This is relevant since Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, who were showrunners for ‘Shadowhunters’, are also executive producers on ‘Coven Academy’.

The journey to the screen has been relatively smooth. Disney Branded Television ordered the series on August 15, 2025, and it transitioned from pilot to premiere in just over a year. If the initial viewership numbers are strong, a second season announcement could arrive sooner than anticipated.

The first episodes are set to air tonight. The series debuts on October 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform, as part of the network’s 31 Nights of Halloween. This timing makes it an ideal fit for the season, and for those who miss the cable broadcast, there is a streaming option available.

The live schedule is unique. Freeform is dividing the broadcast into three segments, with nine episodes airing on October 1, six more on October 8, and the final six on October 15. The season includes 21 fast-paced episodes, making them feel more like three movies on Freeform.

The show’s home also shifted during its development. Initially intended for Disney Channel, it was moved to Freeform after the teaser trailer was released. This change aligns better with the darker themes of the series.

Viewers have numerous options for watching. The entire season will be available the following day on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform on Demand, allowing for a complete binge starting October 2. This streaming release bypasses the three-part broadcast, offering the full season at once.

Not everyone is pleased with the binge model. TV Fanatic noted that while the show fits Freeform well, a weekly release might be more effective. This is a valid point, as a staggered rollout tends to sustain fan theories and social discussions for a longer period.

The network’s audience should feel right at home with this series. One outlet compared it to Freeform’s ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’, while another suggested it has the best vibes reminiscent of The CW.

The premise is pure teen supernatural allure. Set in the haunted heart of New Orleans, the series follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock counterparts at an elite magic boarding school. Caught in the midst of ancient supernatural conflicts and forbidden romances, the coven must decide how far they will go to protect their city.

The cast features a trio of young stars. Malina Pauli Weissman portrays Briar, a young woman who discovers her witch heritage, alongside Jordan Leftwich as the mind-reading Sasha and Ora Duplass as the time-bending Tegan. Malachi Barton plays the captivating warlock Jake, Louis Thresher is the newly turned vampire Ollie, and Tiffani Amber Thiessen takes on the role of the formidable Miss Graves.

The trailer hints at plenty of drama, teasing secrets, vampires, and a brewing love triangle. The earlier teaser, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Brutal,’ first introduced Briar, Jake, and the rest of the coven. With creator Tim Federle at the helm, as the Briar, Jake, and Ollie triangle unfolds, which side will you choose, and will it be enough to persuade Freeform to renew the coven for a second season?
