The X-Men are gearing up for their return, and early reactions indicate that fans can expect something extraordinary. Ahead of its Disney+ premiere on July 1, ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 has already made a significant impact with critics, achieving a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on initial reviews.

This new season has become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project of Phase 6 to date. It has also outperformed the first season’s score, making it the highest-rated season of the animated series thus far. Additionally, it currently holds the title of the highest-rated animated series produced by Marvel Studios.

The positive reviews come as anticipation builds for the return of Marvel’s mutant heroes. The series continues from ‘X-Men: The Animated Series,’ which originally aired in the 1990s and is considered one of the most cherished superhero cartoons ever made. When ‘X-Men ’97’ debuted in 2024, many fans lauded the show for remaining true to the original while updating the narrative for contemporary audiences.

Season 2 picks up after the intense events of the first season. This time, the X-Men find themselves scattered across various points in history. Some characters are trapped in Ancient Egypt, while others are in the distant future. As they struggle to reunite, they must also confront Apocalypse, one of the most formidable and dangerous villains in X-Men lore.

Critics who have previewed the initial episodes have shared overwhelmingly positive feedback. Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky described the new season as a significant achievement, stating, “Incredible visuals, score, storylines, and performances. Season 2 somehow tops Season 1. Apocalypse is brought to the screen brilliantly.” She also commended the show for honoring its roots while continuing to evolve.

Collider’s Aidan Kelley echoed this sentiment, calling the series a dream project for Marvel fans and noting, “It’s a miracle that a revival like this, which gives this much care and attention to detail, even exists to begin with.”

Grace Randolph from Beyond the Trailer emphasized the show’s ties to the classic era of the X-Men, writing, “Like the first season, season two is a celebration of the X-Men in their peak in the 90s.” Randolph also praised the animation and voice performances.

Meanwhile, Zach Pope rated the season 4.5 out of 5, stating, “Season 2 is everything you could want.” He added that the new episodes reminded him why fans fell in love with the X-Men initially, particularly highlighting Apocalypse as the definitive version of the character.

The cast features several actors returning from the original animated series, including Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. Their return has helped preserve the essence of the original show while introducing new narratives and challenges.

Marvel Studios Animation has confirmed that the second season will consist of nine episodes. With record-breaking reviews already pouring in before its release and critics praising everything from the animation to the storytelling, ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 appears poised to continue the success of one of Marvel’s most celebrated recent projects.
