The expansion for ‘Age of Empires IV’ titled Raiders of the North was officially announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, accompanied by a new trailer that showcases its Viking and Scottish themed warfare.

Set to launch in Fall 2026 for Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation 5, this expansion introduces new civilizations, modes, and battle environments to the beloved strategy game.

According to the trailer and the announcement shared by Xbox during the showcase, this expansion is part of ‘Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition’. It continues the game’s updates by adding new factions and gameplay systems aimed at enhancing both competitive and cooperative play.

The trailer revealed that two new civilizations will be added to the game. Players will have the opportunity to command the Vikings and the Scots, each featuring unique mechanics, units, and progression styles. The Vikings are portrayed as a fast and aggressive force focused on raiding, early naval dominance, and a robust economy supported by structures like the Longhouse. Over time, their society transitions from pagan origins to more organized kingdoms.

Their armies will grow in strength, evolving into knight-like units and trained soldiers, while special Saga abilities offer long-term bonuses that reflect their legendary status.

In contrast, the Scots are designed as a defensive and strategic civilization. They depend on strong infantry formations, heavy fortifications, and a food system centered around Highland cattle and fishponds. Their presence on the battlefield is reinforced by castles, towers, and defensive structures. A key feature is the Mustering Hall, allowing players to adjust their army composition between Highland and Lowland styles, providing flexibility based on the situation.

In addition to the new civilizations, the expansion will also feature an expanded version of the Crucible mode. The trailer highlights four new missions with various challenges, including seaborne raids and internal clan conflicts in Scotland. This mode can now be played solo or in two-player co-op, catering to different player preferences.

The updated Crucible system introduces new progression features. Players can earn Boons, Perks, and Mutators while navigating civilization-specific Talent Tracks. These systems are designed to enhance replay value and encourage experimentation with diverse strategies.

The expansion will also introduce two new biomes inspired by northern Europe, including the Scottish Heathland and Tundra Summer environments. These are designed to reflect the harsh and dramatic landscapes associated with Viking and Scottish history, adding variety to the battlefield visuals and strategy.

The trailer, revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, emphasizes a strong focus on historical flavor combined with expanded gameplay depth. It showcases both large-scale battles and smaller tactical decisions, illustrating how each civilization influences players’ approaches to warfare.

Overall, Raiders of the North aims to breathe new life into ‘Age of Empires IV’ with fresh factions, new cooperative content, and enhanced replay systems. With its Fall 2026 release window, players won’t have to wait long to lead Vikings and Scots into battle across the new maps and modes.
