Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Responds to ‘Wonder Man’ Cancellation with Class
Bad news spreads quickly in Hollywood, and when a cherished show is canceled, fans often turn to social media, hoping for a response from the cast. Typically, that hope goes unanswered, as actors may remain silent due to contractual obligations or personal disappointment.
However, this week, ‘Wonder Man’ star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II broke that trend. Just hours after the announcement that Disney+ had decided against renewing the acclaimed Marvel series, the actor took to Instagram to address the situation directly.
“Word just dropped that ‘Wonder Man’ won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww!) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out,” Abdul-Mateen shared on Instagram, referencing Variety’s exclusive report on the cancellation, which surfaced earlier that day.
The cancellation surprised fans, especially since ‘Wonder Man’ had been renewed for a second season back in March, a rarity for Marvel’s live-action Disney+ lineup. Reports indicate that a writers’ room for the new season was never formed, and the show’s writers were released to pursue other opportunities before production could begin.
Instead of expressing anger or remaining silent, Abdul-Mateen chose to use his platform to thank those who supported the series during its run. He expressed gratitude to everyone who watched, enjoyed, and shared the show, noting that he could see its impact reflected in fans’ online reactions.

The actor elaborated on how the show resonated with audiences, mentioning that he had spent this rollout period watching YouTube reaction videos himself. He noted that fans told him the series inspired them not to give up, and he felt that same sentiment in the “genuine love” shared whenever he met viewers in person.
Abdul-Mateen concluded his message on a positive note rather than a bitter one. “I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS,” he wrote, referencing his recent Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
This nomination adds to the disappointment for fans regarding the cancellation. ‘Wonder Man’ premiered on Disney+ in January to widespread critical acclaim, boasting a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and distinguished itself from other Marvel Spotlight and Disney+ series by exploring the meta, behind-the-scenes friendship between Abdul-Mateen’s Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery.
The series followed Simon, a struggling actor secretly possessing superpowers, as a chance encounter with Trevor, an actor whose glory days seemed behind him, drew them both into the orbit of a director remaking the in-universe superhero film ‘Wonder Man.’ This premise allowed the show to humorously critique the entertainment industry while delivering genuine emotional stakes for its two leads.
Fellow actors and friends flooded Abdul-Mateen’s comment section with support following his post. Actor Y’lan Noel offered a brief show of respect, while ‘Us’ co-star C.S. Lee praised his performance and expressed disappointment that the story would not continue.

There is a small silver lining amidst the cancellation news. Sources close to the situation have indicated that while ‘Wonder Man’ will not proceed with a second season, the characters of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery may still appear elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.
For now, fans are left to process the end of one of the more surprising critical successes to emerge from Marvel’s Disney+ era, abruptly cut short despite an earlier green light that made it feel like an exception to the norm.
