Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Release Date and New Look Set High Expectations
Horror enthusiasts have been closely observing Zach Cregger’s evolution from a comedy background to one of the most thrilling new voices in horror. His upcoming project is poised to be his most ambitious yet. Following the success of his original horror films ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons,’ Cregger is now tackling one of gaming’s iconic franchises with a unique twist.
This project, a reimagining of ‘Resident Evil,’ has been generating buzz for months, thanks to a steady stream of marketing materials. As the release date approaches, Sony continues to unveil new posters and footage, each adding to the film’s ominous atmosphere.
The latest promotional material features a striking new poster that emphasizes the film’s premium theatrical formats. It depicts a bloodied medical bag against a dark blue background, with a shadowy figure fleeing in the distance. This confirms that ‘Resident Evil’ will exclusively hit theaters starting September 18, with premium formats like IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX each receiving their own unique poster variants.

Unlike earlier adaptations that closely followed the games’ established narratives, Cregger’s version presents a completely original story that unfolds alongside the events of ‘Resident Evil 2’ rather than retelling them. The film centers on Bryan, a medical courier portrayed by Austin Abrams, who finds himself in a relentless struggle for survival as Raccoon City descends into chaos over the course of one terrifying night.
Cregger has been clear about his creative vision for the project, aiming to capture the essence of what it feels like to play through a ‘Resident Evil’ game rather than simply adapting a specific storyline. He explained that the movie occurs concurrently with the events of ‘Resident Evil 2,’ in a trailer breakdown he shared with IGN, describing Bryan as just another individual on a separate mission while the more familiar police station storyline unfolds elsewhere in the city.
This approach aligns well with Cregger’s broader creative style. Before transitioning into horror, he worked in slapstick comedy on projects like ‘Miss March’ and as part of the sketch group ‘The Whitest Kids U’Know,’ a background that contrasts sharply with the grounded, unsettling tone he has since developed.
Joining Abrams in the cast are Zach Cherry from ‘Severance,’ Kali Reis from ‘True Detective: Night Country,’ Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson from ‘Twisted Metal,’ creating a lineup of actors known for their work in prestigious television rather than typical horror franchise roles. Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, recognized for his contributions to the ‘John Wick’ franchise’s third and fourth installments.
The film has received an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout, aligning it with the tone fans expect from Cregger’s previous genre works. With a runtime of approximately 94 minutes, the film promises a tight, relentless pace that complements its single-night survival premise.
‘Resident Evil’ is scheduled to premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 17 before its wide theatrical release the following day. Given Cregger’s impressive track record with critics and audiences in his prior horror films, expectations are high that this franchise reinvention could emerge as one of the standout theatrical releases of the fall season.
