With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ just weeks away, the promotional press tour is in full swing, and this latest round of interviews is revealing more than the usual promotional chatter.

Instead of sticking to safe soundbites about the upcoming film, Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Jacob Batalon sat down with Letterboxd for a conversation that turned into a nostalgic journey, reacting to genuine fan reviews of the trilogy that introduced Holland’s Peter Parker. During this discussion, Zendaya settled a long-standing fan debate about which of the three earlier films stands out the most, and her choice, highlighted by Geek Vibes Nation, was unexpected.

In the interview, Zendaya revealed that ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is her favorite film in the trilogy, describing it as the movie she revisits time and again.

Zendaya explained that she loves ‘Homecoming’ because it has a comforting quality, making it feel cozy and enjoyable every time she watches it.

Zendaya’s sentiments were echoed by Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon, with Holland noting that among superhero films, there’s nothing quite like ‘Homecoming’, calling it a genuinely unique entry in the genre. Batalon fondly recalled the film’s iconic hoodie Spider-Man scene, describing it as a classic moment from the movie.

The conversation began after the cast read a fan review from a Letterboxd user named Dawson Joyce, who described the first film as a witty, charming, John Hughes-style coming-of-age comedy that also serves as a colorful and well-constructed superhero movie grounded more in character than spectacle. Holland credited director Jon Watts for the film’s tone and success.

Watts directed all three films in the trilogy, following ‘Homecoming’ with ‘Far From Home’ and ‘No Way Home’, before Destin Daniel Cretton took over directing duties for the upcoming installment. This interview is part of the promotional campaign for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which continues the story years after the trilogy’s conclusion.

The fourth film follows Peter Parker in a new chapter of his life, navigating a world that no longer remembers him after the events of ‘No Way Home’, as he faces new villains while striving to protect a city that has forgotten his identity. This film represents a fresh creative direction for the franchise, shifting away from the multiversal spectacle of its predecessor towards a more grounded, street-level portrayal of the character.

Zendaya’s fondness for ‘Homecoming’ aligns with how the film has aged among fans, many of whom appreciate its lighter, high school-centric tone as a refreshing contrast to the increasingly high-stakes sequels that followed.

The film marked Zendaya’s feature film debut and became the second most successful Spider-Man movie at the time of its release, grossing over 800 million dollars against a 175 million dollar budget. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to hit theaters on July 31, it seems even its stars continue to cherish where the story all began.
