Rian Johnson Talks ‘Knives Out’ Future Post-‘Wake Up Dead Man’
When Rian Johnson released Knives Out starring Daniel Craig, the whodunnit film became a massive hit and even earned numerous nominations and awards. Initially distributed by Lionsgate, the franchise has since been bought by Netflix, and the streaming giant is not shying away from the fact that they want to franchise the concept.
Since then, Glass Onion was released, and Wake Up Dead Man, the third movie in the franchise, is scheduled to be released later this year.
In light of that fact, it is natural that people are wondering how long the franchise could go on, and that was the question that Rian Johnson had to answer in a recent discussion with the press.
Neither Johnson nor Craig have talked about Knives Out as a trilogy, so the possibility of more movies is still there. In light of that fact, Johnson was asked how long he was planning on making these movies and he gave a clear answer.
“As long as Daniel [Craig] still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, ‘Oh, wow, could we pull that off?’ I love the genre.,” Johnson said.
“It’s endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities. But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don’t feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that’s not a mystery at all. It’s a totally different genre. One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres. ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ this next movie, is so different than ‘Glass Onion.’ It’s like night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it’s exciting,” he added.
The future seems quite bright, but it’s still too early to tell. Plus, we have to see what Craig things about this. In the meantime, we can only wait for Wake Up Dead Man to see whether it’s as good or even better than the previous ones.
