‘Only Murders in the Building’ Star Martin Short Discusses Daughter Katherine’s Death
Martin Short has opened up about the tragic passing of his daughter, Katherine Short, during a recent interview. His heartfelt comments were featured in a segment on CBS Sunday Morning, which serves as the source of this information.
Katherine passed away in February at the age of 42. Short described the experience as profoundly painful for his family, stating, “It’s been a nightmare for the family.”
He also shared insights into the serious mental health struggles that affected her life over the years. He explained, “She fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she couldn’t until she couldn’t.”
Katherine was the eldest of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman. Reports from the same CBS interview indicate that she had been facing long-term mental health challenges.
Professionally, Katherine dedicated her life to helping others in the mental health field. She was a licensed social worker in Los Angeles and collaborated with organizations like Bring Change 2 Mind, which aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. She studied psychology and gender and sexuality studies at NYU, later earning a master’s degree in social work from USC. Additionally, she worked at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital before moving into private practice.
Her mother, actress Nancy Dolman, lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2010. Short has previously discussed how the loss of his wife profoundly affected his family.
In the CBS Sunday Morning interview, Short reflected on both losses and the challenges of navigating grief and illness. He noted that such experiences are often unexpected until one faces them directly.
Martin Short is also set to appear in a new Netflix documentary titled “Marty, Life Is Short,” which is scheduled for release on May 12. The documentary will explore his extensive career in entertainment, featuring interviews and archival footage.
Following Katherine’s death, fans and colleagues have expressed their support online, honoring her contributions and the positive impact she made through her work in mental health.
