‘Mortal Kombat 2’ has finally hit theaters, but fans have noticed the absence of a beloved fighter. Writer Jeremy Slater has shared insights into why this character was cut before the film’s completion.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Slater disclosed that Tremor was initially slated to appear in the film during its early stages. The ninja, known for his control over lava and metal, was meant to engage in a fight scene with Sonya Blade, portrayed by Jessica McNamee.

Slater mentioned that Tremor’s powers would have added a unique visual flair to the action sequences. The original script even included a complete fight sequence for the character, who was ultimately meant to be killed off.

However, as production progressed, the creative team recognized that Tremor didn’t seamlessly fit into the narrative they aimed to create. Slater explained that they opted to concentrate more on Sindel, believing she could contribute greater emotional depth to the sequel.

The team felt that Sindel had not been adequately utilized in previous drafts, prompting them to enhance her role. Portrayed by Ana Thu Nguyen, Sindel’s connection to Kitana added emotional stakes to the tournament and the larger conflict against Outworld.

Slater also admitted that Tremor’s role was too minor to develop him adequately for audiences unfamiliar with the games. With a vast array of fighters in the Mortal Kombat universe, the filmmakers faced tough decisions about which characters could realistically be included.

Despite his absence, Tremor remains a fan-favorite among long-time players, even though he is one of the franchise’s lesser-known characters. Unlike iconic figures like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, Tremor primarily appeared as downloadable content and first made his debut in ‘Mortal Kombat: Special Forces’ back in 2000.

‘Mortal Kombat 2’ continues the narrative from the 2021 reboot, following Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, as he joins Earthrealm’s fighters in the perilous tournament against Shao Kahn and Outworld. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the sequel features returning characters alongside several new fighters from the games.

Although Tremor did not make the final cut, Slater’s remarks indicate that the team seriously contemplated including him before deciding to shift focus toward characters with stronger ties to the main storyline.
