‘Lanterns’ First Plot Details Uncover a Rural Alien Mystery and a Skeptical Sheriff
HBO’s forthcoming DC series ‘Lanterns‘ has been characterized since its announcement as a grounded, ‘True Detective’-style crime thriller centering on two of the most iconic Green Lanterns in comic book history. The series stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively, with a powerhouse creative team including Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King at the helm. From the outset, it was evident that this would not be a typical superhero adventure, with early promotional material emphasizing the neo-Western, small-town vibe that distinguishes it from other offerings in the current DC Universe.
James Gunn himself described the project as “more of a True Detective-type mystery,” featuring Jordan and Stewart as “supercops on Precinct Earth” who encounter “an ancient horror” lurking within the heartland of America. This intriguing premise has generated significant anticipation, making the series one of the most talked-about titles on HBO’s schedule. A trailer showcased the buddy-cop chemistry between the two leads, providing glimpses of the Green Lantern suit, the Power Ring, and Hal in flight, while maintaining a strikingly grounded, rural tone.
Recently, a detailed plot description from Entertainment Weekly has added a new dimension to the narrative. Set in 2016, the story kicks off with a shooting in the fictional town of Rushville, Nebraska. Hal Jordan, who has been monitoring the area remotely for some time, suspects the incident may have extraterrestrial ties. However, he faces opposition from the town’s Sheriff Kerry, portrayed by Kelly Macdonald, who finds no evidence to support his claims and is reluctant to accept the possibility of cosmic interference.
Macdonald’s Sheriff Kerry is depicted as a no-nonsense woman deeply committed to her family and community, with a resilience shaped by a complex past that helps anchor the town as its secrets begin to emerge. The tension between her grounded instincts and Hal’s alien suspicions is poised to be one of the show’s most engaging dynamics. Additionally, Kerry is positioned as a potential love interest for Chandler’s Hal Jordan, adding another emotional layer to an already intricate story.
Showrunner Chris Mundy described the series in an interview with Men’s Health as being “as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show,” and the new plot description reinforces this notion. Mundy has discussed the show’s exploration of “replacement,” delving into the tension of when a legend should step aside and when the next generation is ready to take over, with the dynamic between Jordan and Stewart at the emotional heart of the series.
Production concluded in July 2025 after filming primarily in Los Angeles, with the series set to premiere on August 16, 2026 on HBO, consisting of eight episodes. With a top-tier writing team, a cast brimming with dramatic talent, and a premise that treats its superhero mythology as a backdrop for a deeply human story, ‘Lanterns’ is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive comic book adaptations in recent years.
