Peter Jackson Discusses Ryan Gosling’s Firing From ‘The Lovely Bones’ After Weight Gain
Peter Jackson has finally addressed one of the most discussed casting changes in ‘The Lovely Bones,’ where Ryan Gosling was initially cast as the father of Saoirse Ronan’s character before being replaced during pre-production.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jackson spoke about the situation while attending Cannes after receiving an Honorary Palme d’Or. He was asked about Gosling’s previous remarks, where the actor mentioned he was fired from the 2009 film after gaining weight for the role.
While Jackson did not comment specifically on Gosling’s case, he shared insights into how recasting decisions are made from a filmmaker’s perspective. He emphasized that it is rarely about blaming an actor, but rather about finding the right fit between the performer, the story, and the overall production.
“I won’t talk about any particular examples of actors because it’s a personal, private thing and it’s not their fault,” Jackson stated. He noted that when actors are replaced, he views it as a casting mistake rather than a failure on the actor’s part.
He elaborated that filmmaking relies heavily on the chemistry between cast members and the creative team. There are times when even a talented actor may not align with the film’s ultimate direction.
“Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera. They’re chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film,” Jackson explained. “It’s just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character.”
Jackson also mentioned that casting is a meticulous process where filmmakers aim to get everything right before filming begins, but sometimes adjustments are necessary if the vision does not align with what is being portrayed on screen.
In a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Gosling reflected on the situation, stating there was a misunderstanding regarding the character’s appearance and how he prepared for the role. He believed the father character should be significantly heavier and committed to that transformation without further discussion during pre-production.
Gosling remarked, “We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds.” He humorously added, “Then I was fat and unemployed.”

Saoirse Ronan later shared her thoughts on the recasting during a 2024 appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. She mentioned that she had already started preparing with the original cast before Gosling was replaced and had formed a bond with him during that time.
Ronan clarified that the decision was not personal and was based on creative direction. She expressed understanding for the change, noting that Mark Wahlberg, who took over Gosling’s role, brought a different kind of lived experience to the character of a father.
“It’s not personal, necessarily. It’s like sometimes you’re just not on the same page,” Ronan stated.
The recasting of ‘The Lovely Bones’ remains one of Hollywood’s more unusual production stories, with both Jackson and the actors involved later describing it as a mismatch in expectations rather than a conflict.
