‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Showrunner Discusses Sicarius’ Future in Season 19
‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ is back for its 19th season, featuring a darker narrative, a time jump, and a blend of fresh cases alongside ongoing plotlines.
The series continues to follow the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) as they pursue dangerous criminals nationwide, while also navigating the personal lives of the team members.
Showrunner Erica Messer reveals that this season revisits unresolved story arcs, particularly those involving Elias Voit, known as Sicarius. Once one of the series’ most notorious serial killers, Voit now takes a different path after years in prison and a significant head injury. Rather than solely being a threat, he plays a role in assisting the BAU to catch another killer who mimics his crimes.
This new antagonist is dubbed “The Fan,” and the storyline delves into how Voit’s past actions continue to have repercussions even after his incarceration. Messer expressed her thoughts on revisiting Voit’s narrative, stating, “I always felt like we had this unfinished business from Season 1 with Voit.” She mentioned that the writers have long contemplated the idea of other killers still being linked to his network.
The season unfolds after a one-year time jump, allowing exploration of the characters’ transformations. Some BAU members are grappling with personal losses and new responsibilities while tackling challenging cases. Messer noted that this time gap enhances the story’s realism, as life goes on even when the team is off-screen.
Voit’s involvement in Season 19 is particularly intricate. While still deemed dangerous, he is utilized as a resource by the BAU to understand the mindset of the new copycat killer. His interactions with profiler Tara Lewis aim to document his thoughts and past behaviors, leaving the rest of the team uncertain about whether they can trust him.

The series maintains a balance between its crime-of-the-week format and a larger, season-long mystery. The pursuit of “The Fan” serves as the central storyline connecting each episode, while smaller cases present individual challenges for the BAU.
Messer also emphasized that the series is placing greater focus on character development. Viewers will witness more of the team’s emotional lives, including how they handle grief, family changes, and the pressures of their work. These personal narratives run parallel to the criminal investigations, enriching the show’s tone.
Looking ahead, fans can rest easy knowing the series is not ending anytime soon. It has already been renewed for Season 20, ensuring the story will extend beyond the current arc.
New episodes of ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ are available for streaming weekly on Paramount+, with Season 19 continuing until July 23.
