Nolan Discusses Time as the Central Theme in His Storytelling
Christopher Nolan frequently emphasizes time as a fundamental concept in his films, and he articulates this perspective in a straightforward manner. In a recent interview with GQ focusing on ‘The Odyssey’, the director provided a clear explanation of why time captivates him so deeply.
He stated, “I’ve always lived in it. It’s the motor in all of our lives. It’s the thing we’re fighting the whole time. It’s the thing that torments us or plagues us all along.” This statement illustrates how he perceives time not merely as a subject but as a daily challenge for everyone.
Nolan is renowned for creating grand films that delve into intricate themes. His narratives often explore time, memory, and space in unique ways. Although his movies are large-scale Hollywood productions featuring big budgets and star-studded casts, they often resemble puzzles. Some viewers grasp them immediately, while others find them perplexing.
Actor Robert Pattinson, who collaborated with Nolan on ‘Tenet’, shared an anecdote about his experience during filming. He recalled a moment towards the end of production when he confided in John David Washington, “I think I’m dead. I think I’ve always been dead.” Washington reassured him that he was not dead, highlighting how even the actors sometimes felt disoriented by the narrative. This reflects the open-ended nature of Nolan’s films, which can invite various interpretations, even from those involved in their creation.
Nolan’s films are distinctive for their departure from conventional Hollywood norms. For instance, ‘Dunkirk’ featured a remarkably brief script with minimal dialogue yet achieved significant success. Similarly, ‘Oppenheimer’, shot partly in black and white, became a massive hit, grossing nearly a billion dollars and winning numerous accolades, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Despite his unconventional approach, Nolan has established a remarkable track record. He has yet to produce a film that has completely flopped at the box office, a rarity for a director of his stature. While many filmmakers experience ups and downs, Nolan has managed to steer clear of major failures.
When questioned about his success, Nolan has remarked that he does not possess a straightforward answer. He believes that audiences are always in search of something fresh. He elaborated, “If you love movies, if you love Hollywood, the history of Hollywood, the history of movies, the thing that you understand in your bones is that what the audience wants is something new.” He also pointed out the paradox this creates, as new ideas are inherently risky, yet risk is what makes films thrilling.
His upcoming film is inspired by the ancient Greek tale and follows Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War. The project boasts a large ensemble cast, including Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, and is being produced on a grand scale with filming taking place across multiple countries. The film is set to be released on July 17.
In summary, Nolan’s career reveals a consistent theme. He continually revisits the concept of time because, in his view, it is a universal experience that everyone grapples with. His films transform this notion into stories that are distinctive, thought-provoking, and frequently very successful.
