Rhaenyra Targaryen has battled for the Iron Throne for years, but in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3, she faces a devastating loss that leaves her utterly shattered. For Emma D’Arcy, the actress portraying Rhaenyra, the character’s reaction to the death of her son Jace is one of the most heart-wrenching moments she has ever portrayed.

In Season 3 Episode 2, Rhaenyra discovers that her firstborn son and heir, Jacaerys Velaryon, has perished during the Battle of the Gullet. While viewers were already aware of Jace’s fate, this moment is entirely new for Rhaenyra, who grapples with the reality of her son’s absence.

In a conversation with Variety, D’Arcy revealed that Rhaenyra’s grief stems from a place of profound disbelief. The loss is so overwhelming that she struggles to comprehend or accept what has transpired. “I think the truth is, for Rhaenyra, it’s an insurmountable loss, and it’s a reality that is too terrible to reckon with,” D’Arcy explained.

The actress noted that Rhaenyra’s initial response is denial. Rather than confronting the tragedy, she attempts to resist the harsh reality by desperately reaching out to Jace. “So the first feeling, the first instinct, is sort of utter denial and to try to push back against that dawning terrible reality,” D’Arcy added.

For D’Arcy, filming this scene was one of the most challenging aspects of the season. She mentioned that there was one particular moment they were especially anxious about shooting because it required Rhaenyra to experience a level of grief that transcends ordinary heartbreak.

“There’s only one scene that I dreaded shooting this season, and it was that moment when Rhaenyra breaks with reality by trying to engage with Jace’s corpse,” D’Arcy shared. The emotional intensity of the scene was also tied to the genuine bond between the actors. D’Arcy commended Harry Collett, who plays Jace, for his sensitivity during the difficult moment on set.

According to D’Arcy, Collett provided her with space before filming but remained supportive when necessary. “He was totally beautiful that day,” D’Arcy remarked. She recounted how Collett approached her afterward, saying, “I just thought I’d give you that space, but I’m also here if you want anything.”

Rhaenyra’s grief serves as a pivotal moment that propels her into action. Following Jace’s death, she resolves to no longer wait and proceeds with her plan to seize King’s Landing alongside Daemon.

However, D’Arcy believes that the pain of losing Jace will linger with Rhaenyra even after she ascends to the Iron Throne. The victory feels hollow as it comes after the loss of the person who was meant to inherit everything after her.

The actress also mentioned that Rhaenyra’s grief influences her self-perception. The woman who aspired to be a formidable queen must confront a more vulnerable aspect of herself.

For Rhaenyra, becoming ruler means bearing unimaginable sorrow. Emma D’Arcy’s insights reveal that Jace’s death is not merely another tragedy in the Targaryen conflict. It is a moment that transforms Rhaenyra forever and influences every decision she makes moving forward.
