Apple TV’s most captivating new horror-comedy of the year has raised the stakes. ‘Widow’s Bay,’ created by Katie Dippold, has been steadily building towards something genuinely unsettling throughout the season, and episode 8, titled “Your Baggage,” delivers a chilling twist that confirms the island’s nightmare is far from over. For anyone who felt a sense of relief after episode 7, that relief has been swiftly taken back.

After seemingly reducing Richard Warren to a coffin filled with dust and bones, Tom, Patricia, and Wyck believed the island had finally escaped its ancient curse, the one tied to its undead founder’s pact with the devil. The series, which premiered on Apple TV on April 29, 2026, stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, and Kingston Rumi Southwick. With “Your Baggage,” the show reminds viewers that complacency is the most dangerous feeling on a cursed island.

Episode 8 kicks off the morning after the events of episode 7, and everything seems perfect. Richard Warren is dead, the curse appears lifted, and the town is buzzing with renewed energy as Wyck, Patricia, and Tom share a relaxed breakfast together.

The atmosphere is almost excessively cheerful, and that cheerfulness serves as a trap. Tom even prints tickets for himself and Evan to attend a Boston Red Sox game, and at the office, Ruth informs Tom that everyone is looking for him, which he takes in stride.

Believing it is safe to leave the island, Tom has secured the Red Sox tickets and is wrapping up personal matters before they head out. The episode cleverly uses this false sense of security as narrative fuel, lulling both characters and viewers into a warm domestic comfort before pulling the rug out from under them. This technique has been expertly employed throughout the season.

Tom’s personal matter involves Evan discovering his old trunk and the photos of his mother, revealing she did not die in childbirth as Tom had always claimed. This confrontation between father and son is one of the episode’s most emotionally grounded moments, showcasing genuine human vulnerability in a show that typically cloaks its emotions in supernatural dread.

Tom explains that technically she did die in childbirth, as she was never the same afterward. A preeclampsia-induced stroke affected her mind, making her unpredictable and dangerous, leading Tom to commit her to an asylum on the island, where she died of an aneurysm two years later, after sending Evan a series of unsettling letters.

Patricia advises Tom that he must get his wife and child off the island, emphasizing that the baby cannot be born in Widow’s Bay. Her maternal warning carries significant weight, especially considering what follows.

Patricia takes center stage in “Your Baggage.” Beginning with a questionable take-out order and an alarm sounding outside, her night quickly escalates into a full-on chase by the recently reemerged Boogeyman. This sequence stands out as one of the season’s most electrifying moments, intentionally echoing a certain iconic slasher film.

The entire Boogeyman sequence is effectively Halloween-themed, enhanced by the social dynamics already established in the series. Patricia bursts into a gathering with Kris and the other housewives, trying to convince them that the Boogeyman is genuinely after her this time, even admitting to having lied about calls as a child after feeling excluded from a previous killing spree.

Patricia’s only weapon is a taser with minimal charge, which she ultimately uses to ignite a stream of fuel at a gas station, setting the Boogeyman ablaze after incapacitating Kris. It’s a delightfully absurd action-horror sequence that only ‘Widow’s Bay’ could pull off with such a straight face.

Before dying in the previous episode, Richard stated that as long as someone from his bloodline exists, the curse would remain active. The closing scenes prominently feature Evan alongside a painting depicting one of Richard Warren’s surviving children. The implication is deeply unsettling, and episode 8 begins to unravel that thread further.

Warren’s bloodline persists, though through whom remains a mystery. Regardless, as Wyck tells Tom at the episode’s conclusion, “It’s not over.” There are strong hints that Evan could be part of Richard’s bloodline, and he may need to die to end it all. The Boogeyman’s return is not coincidental; it signifies the island’s resistance against those who dared to believe the nightmare had concluded.

With a brilliantly amusing Matthew Rhys leading a fantastic cast, and showrunner Katie Dippold crafting a wealth of surprisingly silly and sinister scenarios, the show has established itself as a charmingly ghoulish saga about a locale haunted by the sins of the past. Episode 8 solidifies that reputation.

The balance of horror and comedy that the series has maintained throughout the season remains intact, even as the stakes grow darker. Whether Evan truly belongs to Richard Warren’s lineage, whether Tom’s wife’s fate has always been intertwined with the curse, and who the Boogeyman is targeting next will likely dominate discussions online until the next episode airs. What do you think the truth about Evan’s bloodline is, and do you believe Tom has been honest with his son all along?
