New Star Wars Book Reveals Unmade ‘Andor’ K-2SO Horror Episode Details
A previously scrapped horror-style episode of ‘Andor’ has come to light through new behind-the-scenes revelations, showcasing how close the series was to taking a darker direction with K-2SO at its core.
According to Abrams Books’ The Art of Star Wars: Andor, which is described by Emmy-winning writer Dan Gilroy as a “definitive behind-the-scenes exploration” of the show’s production, the book delves into unused concepts, artwork, and early storylines that never made it to the screen. One of the most intriguing reveals is an abandoned episode idea that would have shifted ‘Andor’ into horror territory.
This concept was hinted at by series creator Tony Gilroy in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he mentioned that Season 2 had once included a “horror movie” episode featuring K-2SO in a more menacing role. In this version, the droid, typically known for his dry wit and loyalty in ‘Rogue One’, would have become a source of fear for a group of rebel characters.
The new book elaborates on this idea further. Writer Dan Gilroy envisioned the episode as a standalone story set aboard a Yavin-bound tanker ship. In this scenario, a KX-series unit becomes trapped on the vessel and starts hunting the rebels inside, transforming the confined space into a survival horror experience.

Production designer Luke Hull also discussed the tonal influences behind this concept, pointing to classic sci-fi horror inspirations. He remarked, “We were going to have almost an Alien-esque/Predator combo in space on a ship, which would have been really cool, but it was a whole other, massive expense.” His insights highlight the ambitious and visually intense nature of the episode.
Ultimately, budget limitations and narrative focus led to the episode being shelved. Hull noted that the idea “always stood very large and looming outside the budget,” and felt like a diversion from the main storyline. Rather than isolating this concept into a standalone detour, the creative team opted to integrate key elements back into the overarching narrative of the season.
This decision allowed ‘Andor’ to maintain its grounded political and character-driven storytelling style, even if it meant leaving behind one of its most genre-heavy experiments.
Nevertheless, the notion of a horror-themed ‘Star Wars’ episode is not entirely out of the realm of possibility within the franchise. Reports from Abrams Books and previous Lucasfilm publishing projects indicate that ‘Star Wars’ has already ventured into darker themes in works such as Dark Legends and the Vader’s Castle comics, as well as novels like Death Troopers, which reimagined stormtroopers in a zombie-like horror context.
There have also been recent indications that Lucasfilm may still be interested in exploring horror within the galaxy far, far away. Tony Gilroy has previously suggested that a dedicated ‘Star Wars’ horror project could be in the works, although no official details have been confirmed.
While the K-2SO horror episode of ‘Andor’ will remain an unrealized concept, its existence demonstrates the versatility of the ‘Star Wars’ universe when it comes to tone and genre. It also raises intriguing questions about how far future projects might push those boundaries.
