Spielberg, Amblin & Amazon MGM Join Forces for ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ Film Adaptation
The next major horror sensation on YouTube may have already caught Hollywood’s attention, emerging from a vibrant corner of online genre storytelling.
As reported by Deadline, United Artists, Amblin Entertainment, and Amazon MGM Studios have acquired the film rights to ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ following a competitive bidding war among several studios. The project is now advancing with substantial support from some of the industry’s leading figures.
This deal reflects a growing trend in Hollywood where viral online horror projects are being transformed into feature films. In recent years, horror concepts originating on YouTube have transitioned from niche internet phenomena to major studio productions, attracting interest due to their established fanbases and distinctive storytelling approaches.
‘The Mandela Catalogue’ stands out as a prominent example of the analog horror genre. Created by Alex Kister, the series debuted in 2021 and has since garnered over 100 million views across its official episodes. It has cultivated a dedicated following thanks to its eerie atmosphere, found-footage style, and psychological narrative.
Set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, the series revolves around a horrifying invasion by shape-shifting entities known as Alternates. These beings can manipulate human perception and technology, including televisions, computers, and GPS systems, aiming to psychologically destabilize humanity and drive victims toward paranoia and despair.
The project is frequently compared to other significant analog horror titles like ‘Local 58’ and the viral hit ‘The Backrooms’, both of which have played a crucial role in shaping the contemporary internet horror landscape.
The film adaptation will be helmed by creator Alex Kister, who is co-writing the screenplay with Tyler Clifton. This detail has already sparked excitement among fans, indicating that the film will closely adhere to the original vision rather than being entirely reimagined for mainstream audiences.
The production team includes Scott Stuber for United Artists, Steven Spielberg and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, and Aaron B. Koontz for Paper Street Pictures. Nick Nesbitt is also producing for United Artists, while Kister and Clifton will take on producer roles as well. Amazon MGM Studios is overseeing the project alongside United Artists.
Industry reports suggest that the deal followed intense competition among studios, underscoring the significant interest in adapting viral horror intellectual properties into theatrical releases. Following the success of other YouTube-inspired horror projects, studios are actively seeking the next franchise with similar global appeal.
With its robust online following and established mythology, ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ is now positioned as one of the most prominent adaptations of a digital horror series to date. Whether it can achieve the same level of success on the big screen remains to be seen, but the caliber of talent involved indicates strong confidence in the project.
What are your thoughts? Can ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ evolve into the next major horror franchise in theaters?
