‘The Odyssey’ Star Elliot Page Discusses His Transformation and Life-Saving Surgery
Actor Elliot Page recently opened up about his personal journey during an interview with Oprah Winfrey on her show, The Oprah Conversation. He expressed the immense relief he feels after coming out as transgender.
In the conversation, Page highlighted how gender-affirming healthcare has profoundly impacted his life. He also cautioned that recent laws targeting transgender individuals are perilous and could lead to tragic outcomes.
Page publicly came out as transgender in December 2020 and later revealed to Time Magazine that he underwent top surgery. During his chat with Winfrey, he shared the joy of finally looking in the mirror and feeling good about himself.
He described how simple daily moments now bring him tears of happiness instead of panic. It’s getting out of the shower and the towel is around your waist and you’re looking at yourself in the mirror and you’re just like, ‘There I am.’ And I’m not having the moment where I’m panicked. I’m not having all of these little moments, Page explained. He mentioned that just wearing a T-shirt and feeling at ease in his own skin is a new experience for him, providing a significant boost of energy. He referred to it as a miraculous feeling, emphasizing that he is finally being himself.
However, Page acknowledged that his experience is tied to privilege. He credited trans women of color for their historical fight and sacrifices, which have paved the way for him. He admitted that he is uncertain where he would be without the resources available to him.
He chose to discuss his surgery to emphasize the critical nature of this healthcare, stating, I wanted to share with people just how much it has changed my life. And I want people to know that not only has it, you know, been life changing for me. I do believe it’s life-saving, and it’s the case for so many people.
The actor also addressed the numerous bills being introduced by lawmakers that target transgender youth, aiming to restrict their healthcare and participation in school sports. Page criticized these politicians for spreading falsehoods, pointing out that major medical institutions fully support transgender healthcare as it ensures safety. He warned that denying children access to healthcare and sports could lead to tragic outcomes.
Supporting this, CBS News cited research from The Trevor Project, indicating that over ninety percent of LGBTQ youth feel that recent political actions have negatively impacted their mental health. Alarmingly, the organization estimates that an LGBTQ youth attempts suicide every forty-five seconds in the United States.
Page hopes that by leveraging his fame to raise awareness, people will gain a better understanding of these challenges. In addition to his activism, Page is actively pursuing his acting career and is set to star in a new film titled ‘The Odyssey,’ directed by Christopher Nolan.
