Netflix’s ‘The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’ Finds Its Patsy and John Ramsey
Netflix is set to launch a new limited series centered on one of the most infamous true crime cases in American history. ‘The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’ has found a new home on the streaming platform after being dropped by Paramount+.
Reports indicate that Netflix will release the series globally during the winter season. This project delves into the unsolved 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a 6-year-old child beauty pageant contestant whose death captured national attention and remains one of the most discussed criminal cases in the United States.
The series has announced its main cast, with Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen portraying JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. Written by Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach, the show aims to explore the events surrounding the case from various perspectives.
Sources close to the production have revealed that the series will not only focus on the Ramsey family but will also examine the investigators involved and the intense media scrutiny that followed JonBenét’s death. The narrative will highlight how the public, law enforcement, and media responded as the mystery persisted for decades.
Originally developed at Paramount+, Query and Wallach created the series under the previous ownership. Query has a personal connection to the case, having been in the same kindergarten class as JonBenét.
Paramount+ officially picked up the limited series in September 2024, completing production in January 2025. However, following Skydance Global’s acquisition of Paramount, the new leadership reviewed the project and ultimately decided not to proceed, leaving the finished series without a release date.
Netflix later intervened, acquiring the project and allowing the completed series to finally reach audiences. This move provides the production a second chance after months of waiting for a new platform.
‘The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’ joins a growing trend of true crime projects that revisit notable cases, aiming to explore various facets of the story. Rather than solely focusing on the mystery, the Netflix series intends to examine the individuals affected by the case and how the investigation unfolded under public scrutiny.
In addition to writing the series, Query and Wallach will serve as executive producers. The production team includes Melissa McCarthy, Elliott LaGravenese, and Liz Garbus, with David Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, and David Hutkin producing for 101 Studios.
The JonBenét Ramsey case has captivated public interest since December 1996, when JonBenét was found dead in her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. The investigation garnered worldwide attention, raising questions about the evidence, the investigative process, and the individuals connected to the case.
Nearly three decades later, the mystery remains officially unsolved. Netflix’s ‘The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’ will revisit the case with a dramatic retelling that examines the tragedy, the investigation, and the lasting impact on everyone involved.
