Illumination has crafted an entire empire around its small, babbling, yellow creatures, and the studio’s latest venture may have just achieved its most significant creative triumph yet. ‘Minions & Monsters’ premiered in theaters on July 1, marking the seventh installment in the Despicable Me universe and the third standalone chapter focused entirely on the Minions.

Once again directed by Pierre Coffin, who lends his voice to every single Minion in the film, the story follows new characters James and Henry as they stumble into 1920s Hollywood after their tribe’s typical search for a villainous boss goes awry. The narrative unfolds with the duo chasing stardom during the silent film era, only to pivot towards creating their own monster movie as talkies threaten their careers.

This premise has struck a chord with early audiences, as ‘Minions & Monsters’ debuted with an A minus grade on CinemaScore, a promising indicator for a franchise that has traditionally appealed more to younger viewers than to a broader audience.

This positive audience feedback aligns with an equally impressive response from critics, who have shown more favor towards this installment than any previous Minions release. The film currently boasts a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, achieving the highest score for any Illumination movie in the studio’s sixteen-year history, surpassing even the original ‘Despicable Me’ from 2010.

Much of the acclaim focuses on how the film embraces classic Hollywood iconography, beginning with a rewind of the Universal logo back to its earliest silent era design before diving into a narrative filled with nods to Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and the golden age of filmmaking. Reviewers have frequently likened its structure to films like ‘Singin in the Rain’ and Damien Chazelle’s ‘Babylon,’ praising the film’s unexpectedly earnest tribute to cinema itself.

The voice cast has also contributed significantly to this positive reception, featuring Christoph Waltz as a film director mentor, Jesse Eisenberg voicing an alien robot invader named Dort, and Trey Parker as a summoned creature called Goomi, who becomes pivotal in the film’s latter half. The cast also includes Jeff Bridges, Allison Janney, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr, along with a surprise cameo from filmmaker George Lucas playing himself.

However, not all reactions have been uniformly positive, with some critics noting that the film loses momentum once its monster movie plot fully unfolds in the latter half, moving away from the sharper Old Hollywood satire that characterizes its opening. Even those mixed reviews generally still regard it as the strongest entry in the Minions spinoff series to date.

Illumination enters this release with genuine box office momentum, as the Despicable Me franchise has amassed nearly 2 billion dollars domestically and over 5.6 billion dollars worldwide across its previous six films. The two prior standalone Minions films performed exceptionally well during this same early July window, with 2015’s original opening to 115.7 million dollars domestically and 2022’s ‘The Rise of Gru’ debuting at 107 million dollars.

‘Minions & Monsters’ now heads into the busy July 4th holiday weekend with strong reviews and a solid CinemaScore, positioning it to potentially lead the box office for the weekend. With franchise films in this series historically averaging around a 325 million dollar median domestic total, this latest chapter seems well-positioned to maintain that trend.
