Matthew Lillard experienced an awkward moment at a recent horror convention when a fan confronted him about a past encounter. This incident unfolded during a Midsummer Scream panel in Long Beach, California, where Lillard participated in a reunion celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original ‘Scream’. The event also featured Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy, Lee Waddell, and other members of the horror franchise.

Videos of the encounter circulated on social media after the event. In the footage, an unidentified man approached the microphone, recalling a meeting with Lillard several years prior.

The fan expressed that he had attempted to share a theory with Lillard regarding a connection between ‘Scream’ and the 1995 film ‘Mad Love’, both of which feature Drew Barrymore in different roles. According to the fan, Lillard dismissed the theory with a comment, “What were you smoking?” Years later, he decided to address the incident in front of the convention audience.

“The way you made me feel…when you told me that, you kind of lost me as a fan,” he told Lillard, adding, “I just wanted you to know that.” Lillard paused briefly before responding with a light-hearted joke, “What a great question,” he quipped.

The conversation continued, although parts were hard to hear due to the crowd. The fan mentioned, “I always had a thing for you,” before reiterating, “Yeah, you lost me as a fan. Thank you.” The audience reacted with loud boos as he finished speaking.

Lillard then shifted his focus to another group of fans. From the stage, Jamie Kennedy prompted Lillard to explain the confrontation, but Lillard preferred to move on, stating, “It does not matter. Next question!”

One Instagram user who shared footage of the moment defended Lillard, commenting, “Protect Matthew Lillard at all costs. This is not okay.”

This awkward exchange occurred during a significant weekend for ‘Scream’ fans, as Midsummer Scream gathered several individuals associated with the original 1996 film to commemorate its 30th anniversary.

Lillard remains a prominent figure in the franchise, known for his role as Stu Macher, one of the original Ghostface killers alongside Ulrich’s Billy Loomis. Although Stu appeared to die at the end of the first film, discussions about the character continue among ‘Scream’ fans.

Lillard also reprised his role for ‘Scream 7’, where it was revealed that another character used AI technology to create a deepfake version of Stu’s face during interactions with Sidney Prescott, portrayed by Neve Campbell.

For now, the confrontation at the convention stands out as a brief yet memorable moment from an event that primarily celebrated one of horror’s most beloved films.
