MCU X-Men Reboot Rumors Include Two Fan-Favorite Founding Members
Marvel’s mutant reboot has been making waves in entertainment news for the past month, with new casting rumors emerging almost daily. With confirmed names, potential frontrunners, and outright denials, fans have found it challenging to keep track of who might appear in Jake Schreier’s vision for the ‘X-Men’.
Most discussions have focused on a select few characters, including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops, Rogue, and Beast, as insiders share conflicting information about who is officially on board. However, the universe of mutant lore extends well beyond this core group, and a recent report indicates that Marvel may be exploring deeper into the source material than anticipated.
According to a new report from ComicBook.com, an industry insider known as “James Mack” has revealed that actors are being considered for two additional iconic characters: Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel, and Bobby Drake, aka Iceman. If this information proves accurate, their inclusion would complete the lineup of the five founding members from the original 1960s ‘X-Men’ comic series, alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Beast.
The original team, which includes Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, and Angel, predates the more diverse team introduced in the 1975 issue ‘Giant-Size X-Men’ #1, which featured characters like Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine. With a wealth of comic stories centered around this original five, Marvel Studios has plenty of material to draw from if this direction is confirmed.
The timing aligns with other recent reports suggesting that the reboot is aiming for a younger, more classic-comics vibe. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ effectively served as a backdoor pilot for the project, introducing Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey with a reimagined backstory focused on grief, trauma, and the awakening of her telepathic and telekinetic powers.
This emotional narrative echoes the tone of the earliest X-Men comics, which depicted a group of young, awkward mutants learning to work together while navigating typical teenage challenges alongside their superpowers. Reports also indicate that this younger core cast could be paired with more experienced mutants serving as mentors at Xavier’s school, flipping the traditional format fans are familiar with from the original ‘Giant-Size X-Men’ era.
While none of this has been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, and as with most casting rumors surrounding this project, it’s wise to approach the Angel and Iceman reports with caution until there is official confirmation. Nevertheless, the fact that two more original team members are being considered suggests that Marvel’s ambitions for this reboot extend beyond merely revisiting familiar faces.
‘The X-Men’ is currently in production under director Jake Schreier, who recently worked on ‘Thunderbolts’, although no official release date has been announced yet. Given the mounting speculation surrounding the cast, all eyes are likely to be on D23 later this month for any official confirmations.
Whether Angel and Iceman make the final cut remains uncertain, but their addition to the rumor mill enhances the feeling that Marvel is crafting something much more intricate than a simple origin story. For now, fans will need to keep an eye on the scoopers and await D23 to clarify fact from fiction.
