Ryan Murphy Reveals ‘AHS 13’ Actors Will Portray Two Characters in the Same Scene
‘American Horror Story‘ has spent thirteen years cultivating one of television’s most dedicated horror fanbases, and each new season raises the same burning question: which twisted world will Ryan Murphy immerse them in next? This time, it seems the answer encompasses all of them at once.
Murphy has been hinting for months that Season 13 will serve as a culmination of the entire anthology series, bringing back cherished characters from across the show’s history for what he has likened to an Avengers-style team-up against a common threat. This intriguing premise has already sparked excitement among fans, but new insights reveal that the crossover is even more intricate than anticipated.
According to Murphy, some returning actors will be portraying two different characters from separate past seasons within the same scene. He specifically mentioned Evan Peters, noting that at one point during filming, Peters was embodying two distinct characters simultaneously and having them converse, a technical challenge Murphy described as both fun and tricky to execute. He added that he has already edited most of these scenes and is pleased with the results.
This kind of layered performance aligns perfectly with the grand scale of what Murphy has envisioned for the ensemble. Sarah Paulson is reportedly set to play between six and seven different characters from her extensive AHS history, while Jessica Lange is expected to reprise all four of her most iconic roles, including Constance Langdon from ‘Murder House,’ Sister Jude from ‘Asylum,’ Fiona Goode from ‘Coven,’ and Elsa Mars from ‘Freak Show.’ Peters himself is rumored to portray five characters throughout the season.
Murphy has also been candid about which past chapters of the anthology are influencing this new season’s narrative. He explained that the storyline draws specifically from the seasons that fans have resonated with most, naming ‘Murder House,’ ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Freak Show,’ and ‘Cult’ as the entries enriching the new season’s mythology.
This lineup aligns with earlier reports confirming that Peters will revisit his Tate Langdon and Rubber Man personas from ‘Murder House’ alongside Kai Anderson from ‘Cult,’ setting the stage for a direct confrontation between two of his most memorable AHS villains within the same episode. Additionally, Lange is reportedly set to perform a musical number, a detail Murphy revealed was directly inspired by her own request when he first approached her about returning to the franchise.
Season 13 also welcomes newer faces into this expansive returning ensemble, including Joey Pollari, who Murphy has described as serving as an anchor for the new storyline, tasked with grounding the season’s narrative rather than merely functioning as a nostalgia showcase for longtime viewers.
With Season 13 designed to connect nearly the entire AHS universe into one sprawling confrontation against what Murphy has termed the ultimate evil, the technical ambition behind having actors portray dueling characters in a single scene suggests this could be one of the most logistically complex seasons the franchise has ever attempted. Given Murphy’s history of embracing spectacle when the anthology revisits its most beloved eras, expectations are soaring as the premiere approaches.
For longtime fans who have witnessed characters like Tate, Kai, Constance, and Fiona shape the show’s legacy individually, seeing them collide within the same frame marks a genuinely unprecedented moment for the series.
