Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Welcome the New ‘X-Men’ Cast at D23
Marvel Studios transformed D23 2026 into a heartfelt passing-of-the-torch moment, revealing its highly anticipated ‘X-Men’ reboot cast on the same stage where its original stars built the MCU into a cultural phenomenon. Fans watching the Disney Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim felt the significance of this moment as two distinct eras of Marvel storytelling converged on the same night.
This convergence unfolded both on stage and behind the scenes. Director Jake Schreier and Sadie Sink, who recently debuted as Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ welcomed the newly announced X-Men cast to the stage. They introduced Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm, all of whom reportedly met for the first time just moments earlier backstage.
The backstage meeting extended beyond the new cast members. A video captured Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who had just walked the same stage minutes earlier with Hayley Atwell to unveil new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ footage, warmly greeting the incoming X-Men cast. One of the veteran actors told the newcomers, “Welcome aboard.” This gesture connected two actors closely associated with launching the modern MCU with the performers now set to carry one of Marvel’s most cherished franchises into its next chapter.
Evans and Downey Jr. were at D23 to discuss their return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ where they will reprise their roles as Steve Rogers and the film’s central villain, Doctor Doom, respectively. During their segment of the panel, Downey Jr. was introduced not just as the actor who helped kickstart the franchise but as the man who might now bring it to a close, before the trio showcased new footage hinting at the film’s central conflict.
The X-Men reveal concluded with a surprise twist. Adam Driver appeared in a prerecorded video message, confirming he will portray Nathaniel Milbury, better known to comic fans as the supervillain Mister Sinister, providing the new roster with its central antagonist ahead of the film’s release on May 5, 2028.
Kevin Feige emphasized during the panel that the announced cast represents only a portion of the lineup, indicating that additional roles are yet to be confirmed as the film progresses through production. Schreier’s interpretation of the material will follow Jean Grey into what Marvel describes as a completely new version of the X-Men’s narrative.
The backstage welcome aligned with a broader theme throughout Marvel’s D23 presentation, which heavily focused on both nostalgia and expansion. In addition to the X-Men reveal and the Doomsday footage, the night featured a first look at ‘VisionQuest,’ introduced by Paul Bettany and James Spader, along with news of an ‘Avengers: Endgame’ theatrical re-release dubbed as an “Encore” edition.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to arrive this December and the X-Men reboot still two years away, Marvel’s D23 presentation highlighted this moment as a genuine transition point between its founding generation of stars and the actors poised to define its next decade. This sense of continuity, paired with the authentic warmth captured backstage, provided fans with one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the entire weekend.
