Christopher Nolan has established a reputation for box office performances that defy conventional trends, with South Korea serving as a prime example of this phenomenon. Since its debut in the country earlier this month, ‘The Odyssey’ has consistently outperformed the typical box office trajectory that even the most successful blockbusters usually follow.

This film, which offers a mythological retelling of Homer’s epic poem and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, has emerged as one of Nolan’s most resilient international successes to date. Instead of experiencing a decline after its opening weekend, the movie has continued to gain momentum week after week in one of the globe’s most competitive theatrical markets.

The film’s success reached a new peak during South Korea’s recent holiday weekend, where ‘The Odyssey’ earned $4.8 million on the Monday holiday, marking the highest second-Monday performance for a Hollywood film in Korean box office history. This single-day total actually increased by 138.5% compared to the film’s opening Monday, driven by strong word of mouth and the holiday boost.

With this surge, the film has now surpassed $40 million in total earnings in Korea, achieving nearly 5.2 million admissions in just thirteen days since its release. This impressive pace has already allowed ‘The Odyssey’ to exceed the entire $39 million domestic run of Nolan’s own ‘Inception’ in South Korea, making it the director’s second highest-grossing film in the market to date.

The film’s admission total has also surpassed ‘Aquaman’s’ five million admissions in Korea, positioning ‘The Odyssey’ to enter the all-time top forty admissions list for Hollywood films in the country. This achievement puts the film on track to potentially outpace both ‘Joker’s’ 5.3 million admissions and ‘Black Panther’s’ 5.4 million total admissions in the market.

‘The Odyssey’ had already unseated ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ from the top of the Korean box office chart during its opening weekend, garnering over 1.3 million admissions right from the start. Instead of losing momentum against one of the year’s biggest superhero releases, Nolan’s epic has consistently outperformed Spider-Man’s week-over-week performance in the same market.

This consistency is particularly noteworthy given the contrasting positioning of the two films. While ‘Brand New Day’ benefits from established franchise recognition, ‘The Odyssey’ has maintained and even increased its momentum primarily through positive reviews and audience word of mouth, a considerably rarer accomplishment for an original, R-rated epic competing against well-known superhero franchises.

The film’s success in Korea adds to an already impressive global run, making ‘The Odyssey’ Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening weekend ever, along with record-setting IMAX performances across international markets. With the film’s Korean box office run still thriving nearly two weeks post-release, ‘The Odyssey’ shows no signs of slowing down as it continues to ascend the country’s all-time admissions charts.

For a filmmaker already celebrated for delivering remarkably strong box office holds, this latest chapter in South Korea exemplifies yet another instance of Nolan’s ability to transform an original film into a true theatrical event.
