Reality competition television continues to evolve, surprising audiences with fresh twists. Alan Cumming’s Scottish castle has welcomed reality stars, Olympians, and Real Housewives over four seasons filled with deception and intrigue. However, this upcoming chapter is eliminating the celebrity aspect entirely.

Fans have eagerly awaited this change since NBC announced plans for an all-civilian spinoff of the Emmy-winning series. With a cast of total strangers replacing familiar faces, the format’s appeal will be tested in an entirely new way.

The new era has officially begun with the release of the first trailer for ‘The Traitors: New Blood,’ giving fans their first look at the show’s inaugural cast of twenty-two everyday Americans. The nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer showcases the new contestants entering the castle, along with glimpses of the missions, Round Table eliminations, and confessionals that will shape the upcoming season.

“You’re all ordinary Americans, but there’s nothing ordinary about my castle,” Cumming declares early in the trailer, introducing the game to his new contestants as “the best murder mystery ever to exist.” The returning host serves as both host and executive producer, bringing his unique theatrical style to a cast with no prior television experience.

The cast features a diverse range of professions, including astrophysicist Abby Lee, funeral director Joe Vanella, barrel racer Ben McDonnell, physician Jay Vinnedge, nurse Abbey Benjamin, and marketing manager Katie Fites. This variety was intentional, with NBC selecting the twenty-two contestants from over eighty thousand applicants nationwide.

Unlike previous seasons that blended reality veterans, athletes, and socialites with established public personas, the New Blood format relies entirely on contestants being strangers to each other and the audience. This anonymity removes one of the show’s usual strategic elements, as experienced reality competitors often enter with reputations or prior relationships that influence how others perceive them.

The core gameplay mechanics remain consistent with previous seasons. Contestants collaborate through various missions to build a prize fund worth up to $250,000, all while a hidden group of Traitors secretly eliminates Faithful players one by one. If the Faithful can identify and banish every Traitor before the finale, they share the winnings; if even one Traitor survives until the end, that player takes home the entire prize.

‘The Traitors: New Blood’ signifies the franchise’s transition from Peacock to network television, premiering with a special two-hour episode on Thursday, September 17, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. New episodes will air Thursdays at the same time, with each episode available for streaming the following day on Peacock.

With the franchise’s history of multiple Emmy nominations and wins during its celebrity seasons, expectations are high for how this civilian format will resonate with a live network audience. Whether ordinary Americans can create the same level of chaos and tension that made the celebrity seasons must-watch television is the key question leading up to the premiere.
