‘The Odyssey’ Becomes Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movie Surpassing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Christopher Nolan has established a reputation for ambitious and genre-defying projects, and 2026 has marked his most commercially successful year to date. With an all-star cast and a production entirely filmed with IMAX cameras, ‘The Odyssey’ debuted this summer amid high expectations tied to Homer’s ancient poem.
Those expectations have not only been met but exceeded. The film has spent weeks achieving milestones, from becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing film to setting IMAX box office records that even ‘Avatar’ couldn’t surpass.
Now, the epic has claimed its most significant accolade: ‘The Odyssey’ is officially the highest-grossing R-rated movie in box office history, overtaking ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ The 2024 Marvel blockbuster previously held the record with a global total of $1.34 billion, and just days ago, Nolan’s film was trailing by approximately $47 million, a gap that has now closed.
The Universal Pictures release crossed this milestone thanks to an international rollout that has consistently outperformed its domestic earnings, with international markets contributing over 60% of its total gross.
Featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson, ‘The Odyssey’ opened domestically to $123.5 million across 3,919 theaters in July and has maintained the top two spots at the box office almost every day since. Its domestic total has surpassed $500 million, while its international earnings have exceeded $780 million.
In comparison, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ earned $636.7 million domestically and $701.3 million internationally during its entire 2024 run, a figure that seemed unbeatable for an R-rated release at the time. The team-up of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had previously dethroned 2019’s ‘Joker’ to claim the record, serving as the benchmark for mature-audience box office success for two years.
What makes ‘The Odyssey’s’ rise particularly noteworthy is the budget difference between the two films. Nolan’s epic reportedly cost $250 million to produce, which is modest compared to the $537 million combined production and marketing budget for the Marvel sequel. This efficiency has significantly shortened the path to profitability and now, box office history.

Premium formats have played a crucial role in the film’s success. ‘The Odyssey’ is the first feature ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and this format has contributed significantly to its earnings, with IMAX screenings alone generating over $280 million worldwide. Limited 70mm engagements have been selling out more than a month in advance, leading exhibitors to extend those screenings into mid-September.
The film’s international rollout still has momentum. ‘The Odyssey’ expanded into mainland China in mid-August across more than 20,000 screens, while its performance in India has already surpassed the ₹200 crore mark, aided by Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubbed versions.
In addition to claiming the R-rated crown, ‘The Odyssey’ has also become Nolan’s personal box office record-holder, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to become his highest-grossing film ever. It ranks among the biggest theatrical releases of 2026, trailing only ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ for the year’s top position.
For a genre often perceived to have a commercial ceiling, ‘The Odyssey’s’ success redefines what an R-rated epic can achieve without relying on existing franchise recognition. Unlike its predecessor at the top of the chart, Nolan’s film is not a sequel or spin-off capitalizing on established brand loyalty, making its record-breaking earnings even more impressive.
