SpongeBob X ‘One Piece’ McDonald’s Crossover Unveils First Commercial
Fast food collaborations often come and go, but occasionally one emerges that captures the internet’s attention. This summer, that spotlight shines on an unexpected partnership between two of animation’s most prominent franchises, one rooted in undersea humor and the other in high-seas adventure.
McDonald’s has been teasing this crossover for weeks through leaked toy images, official artwork, and social media buzz, gradually building excitement among fans of both series. Now, the promotion has entered a new phase, providing audiences with their first glimpse of the collaboration in action.
A commercial for the ‘SpongeBob’ x ‘One Piece’ McDonald’s collaboration has emerged, showcasing an 18-second clip from what’s referred to as the “SpongeBob Archive 2.” The video prominently features SpongeBob reimagined as Monkey D. Luffy, with sparkling eyes and a wide grin in classic pirate style.
This pairing traces back to an official announcement from the ‘One Piece’ team, which confirmed on August 13, 2026, that the beloved manga and anime would be teaming up with Nickelodeon’s ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ for a McDonald’s Happy Meal promotion. The announcement’s key visual depicts SpongeBob in a straw hat and red vest, leaping from a pirate ship adorned with a Happy Meal box as a sail and a fish-shaped figurehead, with treasure scattered on the seabed below.
The scale of this rollout is impressive by fast food standards. The official announcement page lists over 70 countries and territories participating, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru, as well as France, Germany, Spain, and Italy in Europe, and South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand across the Asia-Pacific region.
Interestingly, one country is notably absent from this promotion: Japan, the birthplace of ‘One Piece.’ The official post from ‘One Piece’ clearly states that there are no plans to run the promotion there, a surprising decision for a franchise that usually prioritizes its home market.
Prior to the official reveal, the crossover was largely the subject of internet speculation. Food leaker accounts like Snackolator had begun circulating images of combo toys weeks in advance, pairing characters like Squidward with Sanji and Plankton with Usopp, although fans debated whether these renders were authentic or AI-generated.
Once McDonald’s Australia and New Zealand confirmed the promotion as “coming soon,” the uncertainty faded. Since then, additional character pairings have surfaced online, expanding the roster to include Patrick as Zoro, Sandy as Nami, Gary as Chopper, Mr. Krabs as Jinbe, and several more mashups blending the personalities of Bikini Bottom with the Straw Hat crew.
While the commercial does not reveal the complete toy lineup, its release indicates that the promotion is ramping up its marketing efforts. Regional rollouts have already commenced in some markets, following McDonald’s strategy of staggering Happy Meal promotions rather than launching them all at once.
What makes this collaboration particularly intriguing is how mismatched the two franchises seem at first glance. ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ is a long-standing slice of absurdist comedy centered around a sea sponge who works at a fast food restaurant, while ‘One Piece’ is an expansive shonen epic exploring themes of freedom, loyalty, and legacy across a fictional ocean.
Yet both share a loose nautical theme, which appears to be more than enough reason for McDonald’s to embrace this crossover. Reactions on social media have largely reflected a sense of joyful disbelief, with fans praising the SpongeBob-as-Luffy artwork as one of the most unexpectedly perfect pairings of the year.
The timing also coincides with a broader resurgence for ‘One Piece’ as a brand. The manga continues to dominate the medium, and with Netflix expanding its live-action adaptation, the franchise has been particularly active in reaching audiences beyond its core anime fanbase.
